Potential Presidential Candidate George Wallace slams Goldwater Adminstration in interview as adminstration for Western Rich Elitists

Wallace: People have talked about for many years especially the past 2 , of the trend of the South towards the Republican party and credit that to the President and in my opinion of that is that is completely false. The fact is there is no functional difference between the Goldwater Administration than a Rockefeller Administration other than the fact that Goldwater is for the Western Elites instead of the Eastern one and Goldwater pretends to be for the average guy despite being an even bigger suckup for the elites.

The trend in the South has more to do with the Democratic party deciding to be the party of Big Government Liberal Elitists instead of the party of the working man in the south. If I run I can guarantee you we will sweep the entire south including Texas, Florida and Virginia. Goldwater and his elitist cronies will be proven to be nothing but frauds and he will be afraid of me .

California Governor Reagan slams Wallace, and calls him nothing but an irrelevant divisive phony

Reagan: The President over the past two years has delivered on his central promise of reducing the power of the Federal Government and returning it to the states and the people. The fact is Alabama Governor George Wallace calls himself the true man of the people and the fact of the matter is the facts do not support that claim. Wallace in his career has been nothing but an irrelevant divisive phony who is actually in support of big government but he just wants to use it to exploit racial tensions just so he can increase his own power. The fact is the true man of the people is President Goldwater who returned the people's money back to the people who worked so hard to earn that money , and now can spend the money the way they like it instead of letting politicians take that money and spend it the way they like. Goldwater has also actually stood up for the 10th amendment by giving the States more control over government programs and lets them how they want to spend the money to help their people , and reduce the burden of regulation.

Facts are stubborn things Mr.Wallace and the facts are the true man of the people is President Goldwater

In this TL the Reagan never teamed up with Rockefeller in an attempt to derail Nixon. Would that make you more inclined to support him or not that much

Breaking News: US Air Force launches largest bombing campaign of war against North Vietnamese

Connally: Thank You for coming here at such short notice. As you may know that for many years now the war seemingly has had no end in sight but now I believe we have finally reached a moment where we can bring a end to this war.  Over the past few weeks the President told the North Vietnamese that the US would be willing to negotiate with them to end the war, with the exception of the demands the President listed out but unfortunately the North Vietnamese decided to continue this war.

So for that reason we decided today to launch Operation Linebacker, an operation which will be a "maximum effort" bombing to destroy major targets and complexes in Hanoi and Haiphong and in other areas. Before I open it up to you for a couple of questions, I want to offer my prayers to the members of the Air Force who will take part of this operation .

Media Member 1: Wouldnt launching such an operation only antagonize the North Vietnamese even more which could lengthen the war.

Connally: I dont believe it would lengthen the war , as the fact is this war was initiated by the North and the fact is they will only agree to end it when they realize they have no hope of winning the war. While we have significantly slowed down their ability to resupply the Vietcong, totally hampered their ability to launch another offensive they still believe they can hold out and regroup. We cant let that happen so we are launching this operation to cripple their ability to do that as well. If this operation succeeds I believe this war could be brought to an end within a few months.

Media Member 2: Many Hawks believe US forces should have invaded the North , why didnt you

Connally: The generals on the ground did not believe that was the right course to take and why they decided that is something I am not at liberty to mention. One more question

Media Member 3: If the North Vietnamese said they were willing to negotiate would you stopping this operation

Connally: It is not something I can answer right now but what I can say is we wouldnt stop this operation until we were certain that they are genuine.

No, he's still a person who went to far right and pretended to use the narrative of the party left him to win over Democrats. I prefer Moderates to former Democrats who went too far to the right.

EDIT : and yes, that means that I would rather vote for a communist than him, even if I know both are bad

I would say Reagan's change to become a Conservative was genuine though. While he officially switched in 1962, he had basically become a Republican by 1952 and supported IKE twice and Nixon in 1960. He also was more pragmatic when he actually governed than when he campaigned .

I still don't care. Being pragmatic will not earn my support. Being a Hard Core Conservative will not earn my support. Iran-Contra is just one of the many things I dislike Reagan over, but it's a big reason, not to mention calling Dukakis an invalid in 1988 (I don't like Dukakis, but that was too harsh and borderline slander. In order to earn my support, you have to prove you're a moderate through governance (like Ford) or be incredibly humble and Libertarian in your approaches (like Goldwater) which is why I support Goldwater and Ford over Reagan any day of the week.

Thats fair enough, and I hope you enjoy the rest of this TL

Anti War Liberal Firebrand Eugene McCarthy Declares Presidential Bid:

McCarthy: Thank You , Thank You.  For many years we have heard the Goldwater and Johnson administrations justify escalating the war in Vietnam by saying that's what we need to do to end it. The fact is they have been proven wrong because all it has done is made the situation worse for 7 years and the fact is it is time to actaully have a policy that ends the war and thats why I have decided to run for President(Applause). I pledge to you that if you elect me President I will end this war by withdrawing all our troops from Vietnam in exchange for the release of our POW's(Applause). Then I will use the money we spend on this war to expand the war on poverty by ending hunger and passing universal healthcare coverage(Applause).

Now the Establishment say that I am unelectable and have no chance of winning. Funny they say that when the party nominated an establishment candidate last time and lost to a candidate who was considered a fringe far right candidate. The reason they lost is they failed to energize the anti war base of the party and because of that our nation has moved hard to the right over the past 3 years and unless we nominate a real anti war candidate we will continue to move to the right for the foreseeable future. So this fight wont be an easy but I know we can win , end this war and reverse the right wing trend of the Goldwater Years(Applause). Thank You, May God Bless You and May God Bless America

Liberal Wing of Republican Party scrambling to look for potential primary challengers after Rockefeller, Scranton and Javits rule out Bids

Brinkley: Earlier today 3 of the most prominent liberal Republicans : Governor Rockefeller, Governor Scranton and Senator Javits all ruled out Presidential Bids which has left the liberal wing of party in disarray as they are now scrambling to find potential primary challengers to the President. One of the reasons we believe they didnt run is Rockefeller, people say that he plans to run in 1976 and running this year would only ruin those chance. Javits is planning on running for reelection in 1974 and a presidential run this year could result in Conservatives gathering the momentum to primary him in 1974 and Scranton we are told is just no interested in running for President Period.

Now we believe Liberals are still trying to run a primary challenge to President Rockefeller and we believe that the top 3 contenders to make that challenge will be Senator Charles Mathias , Congressman Pete McCloskey and Congressman John Anderson. Now even though one of those 3 individuals is expected to run , the President is expected to easily sweep through the primaries with 85% plus of the vote.

Breaking News: US-Canadian Free Trade Agreement becomes Law after Both Houses of Congress Approves it

Goldwater: Thank You, Thank You. Today is the great day for the people of our Nation and the people of Canada(Applause). This trade agreement will help both our nations economically because more trade means more competition and more competition leads to either quality of products increasing or price of product decreasing and both things would result in an increase of demand which will help our economy. It will also help improve the relations between our nations as better economic ties lead to better ties in general. Now I will go sign this agreement into law

Goldwater signs agreement

Congress Passes Constitutional Amendment Lowering Voting Age to 18.

Brinkley: Earlier today, Congress passed a constitutional amendment which will lower the voting age from 21 to 18. If 38 states ratify this proposed amendment, this proposed amendment will officially become the 26th amendment of the constitution.

Fourth Consecutive Strong Jobs Report suggest the economy has bounced back from recession

Chancellor: Today morning the February Jobs was released and showed great news as over 230,000 jobs were created in the month, and overall is the fourth consecutive job report showing over 175,000 jobs created during a month. Economists are now concluding that the recession ended in either September or October of Last year.

Treasury Secretary Friedman released a statement saying these numbers show that the economic policies we have put in place are working.

Goldwater signs Budget which cuts spending by 7 billion dollars over the upcoming year:

Brinkley: The President today signed a budget which cuts the overall budget from 199 billion dollars down to 192 billion dollars this year. The President originally wanted a cut far larger than this but was able to get this compromise passed by striking a deal with Moderate House Democrats that the cuts would be across the board and the overall cut would be reduced. It is still a victory for the President as this cut amounts to a 3.52% cut in the Budget and while the President wanted a larger cut its clear this is the best anyone could hope for with the Democrats controlling the House.

Chancellor: I agree and while Conservative Republicans may be disappointed at the size of the cut , remember the budget neither originates with the President or even the Senate, but in the House which the Democrats control. Now while overall Republicans can put together a working majority in the house with Conservative Democrats, they have to make some compromises to do so .

Note: Packwood later did get revealed to be a huge HP, but without hindsight we dont know that and he was considered to be one of the Pro Environment Conservatives in the Senate as well and that makes him someone Goldwater would select

Peace Delegations from the US , South Vietnam and North Vietnam meet for first time in 2 and a half years in Paris to discuss a potential treaty to end the war

Chancellor: New Senator Jack Kemp met with President Goldwater to discuss regulatory reform. The two main area of disagreements for both of them is how they should pass reform, as the President believes it should be by creating a committee of people which would represent the executive branch, legislative branch, and states approve or deny the implementation of a proposed regulation while Senator's Kemp belief is a cost-benefit analysis based system

Senator Jack Kemp and California Senator George Deukmejian introduces Regulatory Reform Bill which would require any regulation proposed by the executive branch to do prove the benefits are greater than the cost before it is implemented

Chancellor: New York Senator Jack Kemp and California Senator George Deukmejian have introduced a bill which would require any regulation proposed by the executive branch to do prove the benefits are greater than the cost before it is implemented. They both claim this would create a better checks and balances system and would make sure that unnecessary regulations could be stopped from being implemented. The President announced today that he would be endorsing their bill.

New York Governor Nelson Rockefeller comes out against Regulatory Reform Bill:

Brinkley: Former Republican Presidential Nominee and New York Governor Nelson Rockefeller came out today against the regulatory reform bill. He claimed it would limit the ability of the executive branch of taking the necessary actions nedded to adress issues facing the nation. The Governor said he believed the solution to the problem was to appoint competent people to head the regulatory agencies, not to reduce their ability to take necessary steps.

President Goldwater heads to Paris for Peace Talks :

Brinkley: With a deal to end the war seemingly coming closer and closer to reality the President has officially left Washington and is headed to Paris in what seems to be the final steps of negotiations

Breaking News:  Agreement to end war in Vietnam Reached

Reynolds: It is my pleasure to have the chance to interview Mr.President

Goldwater: Pleasure is all mine Frank

Reynolds: So how does it feel to know that the war is finally over

Goldwater: Feels great Frank, the fact is we can finally bring our soldiers home from Vietnam after nearly 7 years is great.

Reynolds: The first question people may ask is what provisions in the agreement where put so the peace is long lasting

Goldwater: The provision we put in the agreement to make sure the peace agreement is long lasting is making sure all the offensive divisions in the North Vietnamese Military were permanently disbanded . This makes sure the North Vietnamese dont have the ability to invade the South again and due to that I believe this peace will be long lasting

Reynolds: Of Couse, there will still be some issues between the nations , how will they get resolved

Goldwater: I dont know how they will get resolved yet, but what I do know is they will be solved through diplomatic means instead of war.

Reynolds: Does US forces still have work to do in Vietnam until 1973

Goldwater: We will work on directly training the South Vietnamese troops with our combat troops until then as well as clearing out the last pockets of the Viet Cong. Now that they dont have north Vietnamese support , this becomes more of an law and order issue but it is critical that Law and Order is maintained in the South for them to be more and more successful in the future.

Reynolds: Final Question and I know you dont want to be asked this right now but do you think the Regulatory Reform Bill will pass

Goldwater(Laughs): Yah I dont want to discuss that right now but I am confident it will pass.

Renyolds: Thank You for coming on

Goldwater: Pleasures mine

Goldwater's Approvals Skyrocket

President Goldwater Approval's:

Disapprove: 25%(-16%)
Undecided: 2%(-1%)

Do You Approve of Goldwater's handling of Domestic Affairs:

Undecided: 2%

Do You Approve of Goldwater's handling  of Foreign Affairs:

Approve: 90%(+32%)
Disapprove: 9%(-31%)
Undecided: 1%(-1%)

Chancellor: These numbers are the Highest of Goldwater's Presidency by far and it is obvious its related to the news of the War in Vietnam Ending. I also dont believe he will maintain these approvals as once the rally around the flag affect fades his approval will also drop.

Depends on who the Democrats nominate and the state of the nation in the Fall of 1972.
His approvals right now are more due to a rally around the flag affect and likely will be lower by Election Day .

Who would you support for the nomination : Sanford , Humphrey , or someone else

Breaking News: Proposed Amendment to lower voting age to 18 officially becomes the 26th amendment to the constitution

Brinkley: The proposed 26th amendment to the constitution which lowers the voting age to 18 has been officially ratified as the state of North Carolina became the 38th state to vote to ratify it. This means beginning in the 1972 election millions Americans between the age 18-21 will be able to vote and depending on what the overall result is, that could make a big difference.

Washington Senator Henry Jackson announces Presidential Run:

Jackson: Thank You, Thank You. For the past 7 years our nation faced many struggles and setbacks when fighting the war in Vietnam but like I always we knew no matter how tough the challenge was we would be successful and we were(Applause). We must also remember though this war while important was only one battle in the Cold War and to win this struggle we must continue to stop the growth of communism no matter where it may arise(Applause). To be able to do successfully stop the growth of communism we must continue to spend an adequate amount on defense and to do that we must have strong economic growth here at home and not only to the people at the top(Applause).

For the past two and a half years the Goldwater administration has declared a war on Unions, Regulations that protect the workers of our nation from being exploited and our economy being destroyed like it was in 1929 and the New Deal in general(Boos). Remember FDR not only brought our nation brought our nation back from the brink of the depression but created the strongest middle class and economy known to man , and later turned our nation into a military superpower which  defeated the Nazis in World War 2(Applause).

If we want to win in 1972 we must stand firmly for economic policies that put the working class first and stands for a strong military and strong nationals security, just like FDR was and our party is the Party of FDR and that is why I am running for President(Standing OVation) . Thank You May God Bless YOu and May God Bless America

Segregationist Governor George Wallace enters Democratic Primaries as well

Wallace: Thank You , Thank You. For the past 2 and a half years President Goldwater and the Republicans have launched the largest assault on the working men that this country has seen in a very long time. Despite all of that  the Republican party are making inroads here in dixie and all across the nation , why because the democratic party has forgotten its actual base. They believe their base is liberals, pointy-headed bureaucrats and ivory tower intellectuals. It is time to take the party back from the liberal elitists and that is why I am running for President(Applause).

The Democratic Party for many years now has told us that forced busing, forced integration is what is needed to make our nation better but all it has done is devastate communities, increase crime, and harm the working men of our nation(Applause) The fact is theres isnt a dime of difference between the Republican Party and Democratic party , they both are there to serve elitists: its just that the Republicans serve Rich People while Democrats serve Bureaucrats and I along with all of you are tired of it(Applause). I can pledge to you that if you elect me I will work my hardest to give power back to you, end forced busing and bring law and order back to this nation(Applause). Thank You, May God Bless You and May God Bless this Nation.

Regulatory Reform Bill passes committe , now faces much tougher test in the Senate Floor

Chancellor: The Senate Committee in an 8-7 voted to send the Regulatory Reform Bill to the floor of the Senate. Now while this is a big step it still was the easiest step as getting it passed the full Senate floor will be much harder. One thing is just because some senators voted for it here in committee doesnt mean they will vote for it when it comes up for a final vote on the floor.

Liberals in GOP break with President and Party Leadership by coming out against Regulatory Reform Bill:

Brinkley: Despite the fact the Republicans now hold the majority in the Senate they will still need help from some Democrats to pass this bill due to the fact that Republican Senators such as  Jacob Javits, Lowell Weicker, Edward Brooke, Charles Mathias, Margaret Chase Smith, Charles Percy, Clay Myers and George Aiken all have come out against the bill and 2 more Senators Mark Hatfield and Richard Schweiker are currently undecided .

They all came out and said that they believe this bill would cripple the federal government ability to deals with problems facing our nation so for that reason they are voting against it. From what we are told both Senator Schweiker is leaning towards voting for it while Senator Hatfield is leaning towards voting against it.

Anyway this means the Republican leadership will need to find at least 8 Democratic Senators to vote for it and maybe up to 10 and that wont be an easy task.

GOP Leadership struggling to get Conservative Senate Dems on Board with Regulatory Reform Bill

Chancellor: Republicans know they will need to receive the votes of 8-10 Conservative Democrats for this regulatory reform bill to pass so far and so far they have only been able to secure the votes of 4 of those Democrats: Senators James Allen, James Eastland , John Stennis , and Harry Byrd.

Other Democrats with Conservative Record such as  Russell Long have all come out against it who called the legislation of the rich, by the rich and for the rich. While there are still enough Democrats left for it to pass it is getting more changeling by the day.

Brinkley: The reason is because while they may be conservative on cultural issues like Russell Long they are at the same time populists and a bill like this is the anthesis of that. On an issue like Tax Reform, it was far easier for the Goldwater admin to make the rhetoric populist than it is on a bill like this so passage of this bill wont be easy.

Former North Carolina Governor and Former Democratic Vice Presidential Nominee Terry Sanford Announces Presidential Bid

Sanford: Thank You , Thank You. For the past two and a half year we have had an administration that has put the interests of rich people and big business over the interests of the working class with policies such as giant tax breaks , deregulation while he cuts programs for the average American. We have had an administration what hasnt done a single thing to solve the most important issue facing our nation right now and that is educating our next generation and that is unacceptable and that is why I have decided to run for President(Applause).

I believe that to fix the problems that we currently face in our educational system we need to increase teacher pay so we can attract the bright among us to the profession of teaching our next generation(Applause), we must expand our student lunch program to make sure no child has to sit in class with an empty stomach (Applause), expand the head start program(Applause) and to continue to fight to make sure every kid regardless of race, gender has a chance to succeed in this nation(Applause). We also must expand Medicare and Medicaid to make every American can afford Healthcare . Thank You May God Bless You and May God Bless America.

Breaking News: Associate Justice Hugo Black passes Away:

Brinkley: Long Time and very influential Associate Justice Hugo Black passed away last night due to a stroke. He has served on the court since 1937 and is a known believer in judicial restraint believing that laws should be written by the legislature not the judicial branch . He though over the course of his career changed on the issue of civil rights, opposing it as a senator but as a Justice became more and more supportive of civil rights, joining the majority in Brown vs Board.

The President responded to his death by calling today a very sad day for our nation, and offering condolences to his family. He also ordered the flags to fly at half mast for the next 10 days.

Goldwater to tour the Southern States to push for passage of Regulatory Reform Bill:

Brinkley: Goldwater began his 10 day tour of the South in Fairfax County, Virginia earlier today to promote his regulatory reform bill. In this tour he will visit 7 states of the former Confederacy and Kentucky all which are represented by Conservative Democratic Senators , many of which the President needs for this bill to pass. He also will campaign for 3 Republican Governor candidates: Thomas Emberton of Kentucky, David Treen of Lousinia, and Charles Evers of Mississippi.

Breaking News: Regulatory Reform Fails to Pass in Senate as 53 Senators vote Nay

Brinkley: The President's agenda to pass regulatory reform has gone down in defeat as 53 senators voted no on the bill today. This defeat is probably the most significant setback of the Goldwater presidency so far . This is the summary of the vote

Summary of Vote:
Republicans: 41 Aye , 9 Nay
Democrats: 6 Aye , 44 Nay

Senators who broke with their party:
Republicans who voted No: Jacob Javits, Lowell Weicker, Edward Brooke, Charles Mathias, Margaret Chase Smith, Charles Percy, Clay Myers ,George Aiken, Mark Hatfield

Democrats who voted Yes:  James Allen, James Eastland , John Stennis , Harry Byrd, Allen Ellender, and Sam Ervin.

Goldwater's Approvals Drop and other polls

Goldwater's Approval:

Approve: 59%%(-8%)
Dissaprove: 38%(-8%)
Undecided: 3%

House Generic Ballot:

Democrats: 47%(+3%)
Republicans: 44%(-3%)
Undecided: 9%

Democratic Primary Poll(Only of Candidates Running):

Terry Sanford: 39%
George Wallace: 23%
Eugene McCarthy: 19%
Henry Jackson: 17%
John Lindsay: 2%

Democratic Primary Poll(If Humphrey Runs):

Terry Sanford: 27%
George Wallace: 23%
Hubert Humphrey: 18%
Eugene McCarthy: 16%
Henry Jackson: 15%
John Lindsay: 1%

Brinkley: Many Democratic Insiders at this point dont want Humphrey to run because they fear all he would do is divide the party and risk the 1972 convention becoming another 1968 or maybe even another 1924 where a contested convention lead to the DNC being forced to nominate a compromise candidate. Either scenario in their minds would result in a catastrophic defeat for the party at all levels , so they dont want Humphrey to run because they dont want to risk either scenario from happening.

Goldwater Nominates Attorney General Paul Laxalt to fill vacancy on Supreme Court caused by the death of Associate Justice Hugo Black:

Brinkley: President Goldwater earlier today nominated Attorney General Paul Laxalt to fill the vacancy caused by the death of Associate Justice Hugo Black. He called Mr.Laxalt a man of integrity who has served the nation well as the Attorney General and will do a finer job as a Supreme Court Justice.

Democrats win Kentucky and Mississippi Gubernatorial Elections, Lousinia Gubernatorial Election heading to runoff

Brinkley: In Yesterday's off-year elections, the Democrats won two out of the three Gubernatorial Races . In Mississippi pro-civil rights Democrat William Waller defeated Republican Mayor Charles Evers who would have become the first African American to be elected as Governor in our nation's history. In Kentucky Lieutenant Governor Wendell Ford defeated Republican Tom Emberton which measn the Democrats will pick up one seat.

In Lousinia no one was elected Governor tonight since no candidate got a majority of the vote, and a runoff will be held on December 18th between Democrat Edwin Edwards and Republican David Treen. The reason Lousinia elections are like this is due to the new open jungle primary law passed last year.  The polls currently show Mr.Edwards up 6 points in the polls but Mr.Treen hopes the President's popularity in the state could get him over the top.

Congressman Wilbur Mills Announces Presidential Bid in Interview :

Cronkite: Congressman Mills thanks for coming on, there are rumors that you may run for President is that true

Mills: Yes I have decided that I will seek the Democratic Nomination for President.

Cronkite: Why

Mills: The reason is I believe that our nation over the past two and a half years has gone off on the wrong track.  We have passed tax cuts which benefit the upper 15-20% of society the most, while programs that benefit the workers in this nation have been targeted. Now the President , the Republicans and some in my own party may argue that these supply side economic policies would lower prices thus increase demand that way and stimulate the economy. My opinion is those policies wont help stimulate the economy and we should go back to the policies that worked so well for us for three decades.

Cronkite: So why you though

Mills: I first have the experience needed to move our nation back on the right track. As Chariman of the House Ways and Means Committee I helped passes Medicare and much of the great society and I believe I can use that experiance as President to get through Congress programs such as the automatic Cost Of Living Adjustment to social security and a full resumption of the Great Society and fo both in a fiscally responsible way as well

Cronkite: Ok Thank You for coming

Mills: Pleasures mine

Senate Confirms Attorney General Paul Laxalt to the Supreme Court:

Brinkley: Earlier today the Senate Confirmed Attorney General Paul Laxalt to the Supreme Court by a pretty healthy margin. Every Republican voted to confirm him and so did nearly half the Democrats in the Senate and due to the confirmation Mr.Laxalt will be set to be sworn in by Chief Justice Burger Tomorrow.

Due to Mr.Laxalt's confirmation to the supreme court, he will resign as Attorney General and Deputy Attorney General Richard Kleindienst will become the acting attorney general. The rumored short list for the attorney general position is: Former Maryland Governor Spiro Agnew, Senator Norris Cotton , Solicitor General Robert Bork, Attorney Lewis Powell, and Attorney James Buckley.

Goldwater nominates Solicitor General Robert Bork to head the Justice Department

Goldberg: Thank You, today we have reached a critical point in our nation's history. With the end of the Vietnam War after 7 long years we finally have the chance to forge a lasting peace not only in the region but in the world. I believe that now that we are in a time of peace we have the ability to negotiate a comprehensive arms control treaty which would finally allow us to make sure that no nation on earth has the power to destroy this great planet of ours. That, in my opinion, is the issue that will define this next decade and this is an opportunity we just cannot let go off.

I also believe that we need to make reforms here at home too. We must reverse the war on organized labor this administration has waged the last 3 years because unions are what made the great American great middle class and will continue to grow it if we defend their powers. Thank You

First Televised Primary Debate to be held on January 9th by NBC's Meet the Press:

Brinkley: We have some exciting news to report to you and that is the first televised primary debate will be held on January 9th right here on NBC during Meet the Press. We have decided to invite all the Democratic primary candidates so far and if more candidates jump in the race at least 24 hours before the Debate, say Hubert Humphrey we will invite them as well.

Senate Confirms Robert Bork's Nomination

Brinkley: Mr.Bork will be now called Attorney General Robert Bork as he was overwhelmingly confirmed by the Senate earlier today .

Breaking News: Associate Justice John Harlan Passes Away

Brinkley: We have some sad news to report to you and that is Associate Justice John Harlan has passed away. John Harlan for much of his tenure was considered to be more on the conservative wing of the court strongly believing in a limited role for the judiciary. He was considered to be one of the most influential and respected justices on the court .

The President has ordered flags to fly at half staff to honor his legacy.

Viewers believe McCarthy, Jackson were winners of Democratic Debate:

Chancellor: After the conclusion of the first televised primary debate , NBC news took a poll on who won the debate and Senator McCarthy, and Senator Jackson came out on top. A reason we believe for that is that Senator McCarthy came out totally on the offense slamming Governor Sanford and the others and basically set the tone for the entire debate as candidates were spending more time debating McCarthy's ideas than their own. Senator Jackson we believe has done well due to the fact that he was able to increase his name recognition in this debate, so he benefited a lot from this debate as well.

Goldwater appoints Malcolm Lucas to fill Supreme Court Vacancy :

Brinkley: Earlier today the President appointed District Court Justice Malcom Lucas to fill the vacancy on the Supreme Court caused by the death Justice Harlan on the Supreme Court. Judge Lucas was appointed by Goldwater in 1969 as a District Justice and over the past two years is known to be a strong tough on crime judge and a strict constructionist as well.

Summary of Goldwater's State of the Union Address:

Brinkley: At the President's state of the union address today he began by talking about the peace deal to end the war in Vietnam and the hopes he has about overall peace as well. He then mentioned though that we must continue to stay vigilant against the threat of communism to lower the chances of war and talked about how peace can only be accomplished with a strong America. that part of the speech drew the largest applause.

Then in domestic policy he once again talked about block grants, regulatory reform , and cutting spending hitting on themes he has in past state of the union addresses and throughout his political career. He then ended the speech by talking about free trade and the importance of it.

Former North Carolina Governor Sanford 28% 11 Delegates
Alabama Governor George Wallace 13% 5 Delegates
Senator Henry Jackson 11% 4 Delegates
Congressman Wilbur Mills 3% 1 Delegate
Former Associate Justice Arthur Goldberg 2% 1 Delegate
Congressman Shirley Jackson 2% 1 Delegate
New York City Mayor John Lindsey 2% 1 Delegate

Brinkley: Anti War Liberal Firebrand Senator Eugene McCarthy started of the primaries with a stunning double digit victory in the first contest in the primary season: the Iowa caucus. The polls had shown McCarthy surging since the debate but nobody expected this win

Chancellor: Well Iowa was supposed to be favorable for him but from this win its clear that the debate reenergized his campaign and I would say gives him a chance of winning the nomiantion

Brinkley: Here is an excerpt from Senator McCarthy's victory speech

McCarthy: Everyone the party establishment, the media , the pollsters said we couldn't do but guess what we did and we will prove everyone wrong in this election and we will finally take our nation back on the right path(Applause)

Judge Malcolm Lucas becomes Associate  Justice Malcolm Lucas after Senate confirmation

Brinkley: District Court Judge Malcolm Lucas will now be called Associate Justice Malcolm Lucas after the Senate overwhelmingly voted to approve his confirmation. He got approved by even a larger margin than Justice Laxalt did and we believe it was due to the fact that Justice Lucas was a Federal Judge before being appointed to the Supreme Court and the justice he was replacing was also a conservative.

LA Mayor Sam Yorty announces he will support President Goldwater in the 1972 Election

Brinkley: Earlier today President Goldwater received his first cross-party endorsement, with LA mayor Sam Yorty announcing he would support Goldwater this year. Most people believed he would support Governor George Wallace but he said that he believes Goldwater has done a great job as President and should be reelected.

Chancellor: Well while Yorty is a Democrat , many would argue he is a Republican in all but name. He supported Nixon in 1960, Reagan in 1966 and Now Goldwater this time and many in the state Democratic Party believe the party should do all in its power to make sure he switches parties soon.

Definitely great news for Goldwater to receive the endorsement of Sam Yorty, a Democratic mayor of one of the largest cities in America.

Dems though would say that with his history of supporting Nixon in 1960 and Ronald Reagan in 1966 he is a defacto Republican.
