As Barnes noted, this is a fairly straight-foward bill: it simply expands Section 8 of the CJ(R)A to include all federal officials, as opposed to just cabinet officers. The current text prohibits the impersonation of a cabinet officer but says nothing about other federal offices, meaning in effect that I could declare myself president tomorrow and there would be no way for anyone bring charges against me.

I discovered this hole a few weeks ago when Nagas was claiming to have been elected Pacific Senator. Hoping to forestall a drawn-out spamfest, I went digging through the CJ(R)A and found that there was no way to prosecute him (or anyone else) should he try to force his way into office. I'm not generally a lawsuit-happy kind of guy, but it makes little sense to have elections if anyone and everyone can seize power at will without suffering a penalty.
