Looks like a lot of the relatively high No votes come from Labor held Sydney interestingly enough - McMahon, Parramatta, Fowler, Watson, Werriwa and, most of all, Blaxland.

What are the demographics like in those places? Lower income I assume. Recent immigrants? Or longer-term European-background? Mostly not of English background?

While the talk was mostly amongst the immigrant chinese and indian communities. The group strongest against gay marriage was the muslim community areas in Sydney, followed by the Indian and then chinese areas.

What's up with rural Queensland that makes it so different from neighboring areas in NT, Victoria and NSW?

The electorate belongs to Bob katter a self proclaimed social conservative socialist.

Also its really rural(only a few small towns across tons of desert and really christian. While NSW's rural electorate voted for yes the population density isnt as long as in Rural queensland.

I wouldnt make much out of it. He always prefers the Coalition over Labor because of social conservatism.

Why did parts of Sydney vote so strongly against it?

Immigrant communities are homophobic because of the culture of their homeland. (Don't forget gay acceptance wasnt even the norm in most Western countries until a decade ago)

Also, don't forget the areas around Blaxland are considered Australia's bible belt.

Upper map is of catholics and second is of anglicans.

I know its uncomfortable but the reason why Western Sydney was against marriage equality was because of the large immigrant population who came to Australia but maintain the social customs of their home country of which unfortunately homophobia was a thing.
