This isn't applicable in all cases, but I do think the efforts to get LGBT+ people to come out of the closet and live more openly in the 1970s-2010s, the current smaller trend of women being more open about having had an abortion, and probably things like open interracial relationships in past decades are long-term an effective ways of persuading people that these concepts are more a normal part of society than is commonly felt and portrayed and therefore less threatening. Of course, both are far from risk-free strategies, especially on the individual level, and it's not a one-size-fits-all strategy.
