As someone who is actually a Power Rangers fan it is somewhat complicated. First off when discussing Power Rangers you have to realize it is adapted from Japanese Sentai (not to be confused with Hentai). They take the in suit action scenes and splice them with original American footage. So Mighty Morphin Power Rangers (the only one the general public remembers) was based on Zyuranger. The action scenes were limited to the Red, Blue, Black, Yellow, and Pink Rangers later joined by Green. Jason the original Red ranger wasn't Native American but a generic white guy (all the original rangers were thin characters). Yes, the Yellow Ranger was Asian and the Black Ranger were African American. Probably casual stereotyping. Tommy was brought in as Green as a fairly generic white guy as well with the last name Oliver (an Irish/Scotch Irish last name). He later became the White Ranger. The Red, Black, and Yellow Ranger actors left after a pay dispute regarding pre production of the movie. They were replaced with a Hispanic Red, and they flipped the races of Yellow/Black. As far as sexism, the Yellow Ranger was a male in the original footage but they went out of their way to cast it as female. Yellow Rangers can be of either gender in Sentai but are usually Female. When they are male there is usually a Female (Light) Blue. Sentai switches teams completely every year. So a few years later they ran out of look shoehorning footage from 3 separate Sentai's to create the 3 seasons of MMPR (it is why the White Ranger costume looks so different but not too different). When they switched to using footage from Ohranger it had a team of Red, Blue, Green, Female Yellow, and Pink. Where it became peculiar is that when they switched to Ohranger for "Power Rangers Zeo" they shifted Tommy to Red Ranger. And he got a previously never mentioned Native American backstory (the actor is of native american heritage). The previous Blue ranger was reduced to just a mentor. Much later we find out that behind the scenes the actor was being discriminated against by Saban for being gay.
Now Power Rangers generally changes storylines every year like Sentai does. New Story, new team etc.
