*I prefer Crawford if he kept Albert Gallatin
**Dependent on how Van Buren campaigned on slavery - I'm told he didn't oppose it nearly as forcefully then as he would later in life, and if he was just like Webster on it, I prefer Webster
***Narrowly prefer him to Taylor; if he's not on the ballot, I vote for Taylor

I will edit this with previous Conventions later.

The Republican candidates from 1932-1944 were really bad and really liberal.

Volunteerist Hoover, centrist Landon*, internationalist Willkie, and reformist Dewey were undoubtedly to the right of Roosevelt economically.

I obviously voted for who I voted for from 1992 to 2016 (parentheses either say no change or who I actually voted for)

The tally:

Republican 12
Libertarian 10
Democratic 4
Constitution 1
Liberty 1

2016 - Johnson - Libertarian (no change)
2012 - Johnson - Libertarian (no change)
2008 - Baldwin - Constitution (Obama)
2004 - Badnarik - Libertarian (Nader)
2000 - Harry Browne - Libertarian (Nader)
1996 - Harry Browne - Libertarian (Browne)
1992 - George Bush - Republican (Bush)
1988 - Ron Paul - Libertarian
1984 - David Bergland - Libertarian
1980 - Ed Clark - Libertarian
1976 Roger MacBride - Libertarian
1972 John G. Hospers - Libertarian
1968 Richard Nixon - Republican
1964 Barry Goldwater - Republican
1960 JFK - Democrat
1956 Eisenhower - Republican
1952 Eisenhower - Republican
1948 Harry Truman - Democrat
1944 Thomas Dewey - Republican
1940 Willkie - Republican
1936 Landon - Republican
1932 William H Harvey - Liberty
1928 Al Smith - Democrat
1924 Calvin Coolidge - Republican
1920 Warren G Harding - Republican
1916 Charles E Hughes - Republican
1912 William H Taft - Republican
1908 William H Taft - Republican
1904 Alton B Parker - Democrat
1900 William Jennings Bryan - Democrat

... I'm going to guess that you did not know that the Liberty Party was closely affiliated with Father James Cox, who had a populism similar to Huey Long and Charles Coughlin.

You got a lot more conservative in the mid-20th Century, what happend?

If anything I would have identified as a conservative Democrat (that's what my family was) but the Democratic Party became too liberal. Eisenhower on the otherhand (without hindsight) would have been a one-off vote for a great man and president.

Franklin D. Roosevelt was the most economically leftist President ever, though...

True, but in those days, each party had conservative and liberal wings, so a conservative could have been either a Democrat or a Republican, just like a liberal could be either. Plus, the context of the Great Depression probably somewhat justified many of his policies.

You don't seriously believe a staunch economic conservative should vote for FDR or that taxes should be raised during a depression, do you?
