Social Issues:

Abortion: Oppose late term abortions, support legal abortion within the first trimester. I do believe however that states have a right to set restrictions and think that if the issue had been decided on a state by state basis rather then via judicial fiat you wouldn’t be seeing the sorts of draconian Texas style laws implemented.

Gay Marriage/LGBT Rights: Strongly support

Immigration: I support streamlining the process of legal immigration and making it significantly easier. I’d also abolish ICE and return to the sort of arrangement that existed in the INS era while prioritizing the deportation of violent criminals and allow all other undocumented immigrants to have an easy path to citizenship. I particularly think that people who oppose DACA are cruel and heartless.

Gun Control: Mandatory universal background checks which emphasize violent crime rather then mental health which I think is discriminatory, gun buyback programs and restrict the manufacture of the most dangerous sorts of handguns. Long term I think this would have the effect of decreasing the number of guns in circulation more effectively then existing gun control laws.

Drugs: Legalize marijuana for all adults 18 and older. Decriminalize some hard drugs with an emphasis on harm reduction.

Alcohol: Lower the drinking age to 18.

Prostitution: Hesitant but open to supporting full legalization. For now I’m inclined to say the emphasis should be on harm reduction.

Death Penalty: Oppose

Black Lives Matter: Support

Affirmative Action: Keep for race, eliminate for gender, expand to include income level.
Economic Issues:

Unions: Repeal Taft-Hartley, enact card check, outlaw right to work laws at the federal level. Everyone should be in a union.

Healthcare: Enact a British NHS style system, rather then Medicare For All make it a VA for all.

Taxation: Return the top federal tax rate to Kennedy/Johnson levels for top earners, enact a wealth tax and cut taxes for the bottom 90%

Tariffs: Good if protecting unionized jobs, bad if being used to block drug importation and protect agribusiness.

Student Debt: Forgive it, make college free.

I’d also support a Green New Deal style program (with a greater emphasis on nuclear though) and think that any worker in oil or coal who would be out of a job should either be fully compensated or guaranteed employment in a more environmentally friendly job at a higher wage.

Government should also fund NASA at 1960s level and invest massively in scientific research and the NIH more generally. We should also have universal paid family leave.

Other stuff:

Generally civil libertarian, I think the NSA needs to be reformed and I’d repeal the patriot act. However this has its limits. I would have supported making the initial COVID lockdowns more stringent and I strongly favor vaccine mandates with no exceptions other then health. COVID actually made me realize I was less libertarian then I’d previously thought.

On foreign policy I’m generally dovish but open to supporting humanitarian intervention to prevent genocide. Biden made the right call in getting out of Afghanistan and it took courage to do something that was politically unpopular. I support Israel’s right to exist but also believe the US needs to exert more leverage to achieve a peace deal. We need to repair our relationship with China while becoming less dependent on them economically.

Essentially I’m somewhere between a Great Society/New Frontier liberal and Willy Brandt/Harold Wilson sort of social Democrat.
