Here we just buy the phone (maybe $30 for a cheap Nokia), and the phone number - another $1.50 or $3, and then just pay for the minutes by buying refill codes at 7-11. I love it, can't believe americans have to commit and all that nonsense.
I know what you mean, and before the advent of smartphones I would have agreed with you, but there's now exponentially more you can do with a phone, plus I need constant access to my email at all times, as well as the unlimited monthly text plan, so for me having to commit to a contract is well worth it.
