There's a big cultural divide between the Eastern part of the state (agricultural, has Sioux Falls, think Western Iowa or Minnesota) and the Western part of the state (ranching/livestock, less developed, has National Parks, think Wyoming). This divide is pretty neatly delineated by the Missouri River which runs right through the center of the state.
For what it's worth, the one Sanders county in the Northeast has a sizeable Native American population (I was under the impression there was a reservation there but when I looked further I didn't find any evidence of one). It voted for Trump despite being an Obama/Obama/Kerry(!) county.
