Japan is realizing quite quickly and painfully that it needs to reduce oil consumption. However unlike America, Japan can change over to a more efficient economy because people live in compact cities and there technological capabilities are superb.

You are very right about other Asian countries doing their part. Singapore has been growing quite a lot economically and I believe they don't have any sources of power other than fossil fuels. I actually have never heard of much of a green movement in Singapore (although they are quite politically apathetic there). China is below the amount that should correlate with their pop. but that is now excuse for the massive increase in oil consumption. If China wants to grow well and sustainably they should start early with mass transit, alternative energies, and better fuel efficiency.
