I'm staying at a super luxury resort on the Andaman Sea, doing 'teacher training' sessions for a few days, making about $200/day, with a free fancy hotel room, free meals, etc.  Co-teaching with a team that includes a couple of young (21, 22 ish) American girls.  I forgot how annoying this kind of person can be!

Practically unbearable - fresh faced, positive, smirking, mewling, self-gratified bores.  I think its more my anti-americanism kicking in than my anti-youth reaction.  I can't even think of the last time I liked an American!

That update is really a cancer coursing through this forum. Just my opinion. I am not agitating to excise the cancer. But Bushie should be profoundly ashamed of himself. That is just my opinion too.

Can't really be a cancer when it is better than the host..

Ouch!  Tongue  Why are you "here" then pray tell if this place in your mind is the cyberspace equivalent of the "Bad Place?" And how can it really be so bad, when you have the opportunity here to yank my chain from pillar to post? Isn't that at least a little modest silver lining to it all?  Smiley

Yeah I like it well enough no doubt, but its just that update is better.

Updating myself - I completed the work, got about $500 in cash, and now they took us to Phuket for a night of 'partying' before flying back tomorrow.  I was exhausted and dislike 'partying' particularly with boring drunks.. did stop for a massage on the way back to the hotel though. Went to a very fancy one so 'full-service' wasn't on offer, only the one small extra was available.  1,000 baht all in.

I really, really hate business hotels. And modern cities. And especially business hotels in modern cities, no matter what country they're in.

I do agree with you there - though I'd hardly ever stayed in them much till the last few months. Why were you in a business hotel?

Ha Ha HA!  My luck strikes again!  Fellows the last two weeks I've been very down as an overdue research of mine was weighing heavily, with some threats and forboding..  finally what I turned in was, though not considered 'bad', was not fitting the parameters of the project.  SO, though I had to pay back the initial money (just $800 or so), the powers that be (dean and vice-dean) moved on immediately and with bright friendliness, and a list of several special high-profile duties (such as moderator and presenter at two upcoming conferences), and 2-3 joint research ideas.

So the point is boys - all undeserving, I'm still sitting pretty.

I was atrociously bitten all over my feet, ankles, and low calves tonight by red ants!  I was standing talking to a 'lady of the evening' along the beach, and was suddenly under a vicious and terrible attack.  I jumped up and down, swiping at my lower appendages.  It was pretty amusing I suppose.  It took several minutes, nearly a half an hour, for the pain to subside - I nearly threw in the towel, but happily found succor soon after with a very nice new friend.

Somebody I graduated with died of a heroin overdose. I didn't really know him too well, but these types of deaths are happening way often on Long Island these days, and it's been continuously increasing the past few years here. It worries me.

Yes I hear heroin is rife in the suburbs and exurbs of Missouri as well.  It sounds bizarre to me to talk to old acquaintances there via facialbook and they say 'you can't leave home for more than 2-3 days or those heroin addicts will burglarize your house' - this in an area we used to leave our doors unlocked and our keys in our car ignitions just 15-20 years ago.

You lived among the rubes in the Ozarks, opeob?

Well, the family compound was in the exurbs, more like suburbs now, but we also had the weekend places ('farms') in the northern edge of the Ozarks.  Of course after 18 I never really lived there anymore, but spent a good deal of time there.  I never really even saw any sign of meth - seemed like that came along just around the very late 90s, increased for a few years, and then now after the Depression they're all just talking about heroin and nothing else.

Hey, I not only survived that conference, but I cemented friendlier relations with the boss.. and they gave me an envelope with 1,500 baht in it for my 'extra work) - about $50 or so.

The weird thing was - the conference was infiltrated by about five Thai and Laotian Christians!  Uninvited/unregistered weirdos who seemed to be vaguely academic (like grad students or something), but all they did was interrupt question periods with bizarre lectures and non-sequiturs about god and Christianity.  In my section one even tried to read from the Bible!  At lunch some of them chatted me up and told me I was a 'follower of Satan' for supporting Obama and gay marriage!  This was all incredibly bizarre coming from Thai people (who rarely convert), but I suppose those few who do convert tend to be extremists.

Well, colour me surprised, I hadn't pictured you as the 'active' one.  But in all seriousness get well soon.

I seriously doubt it weighs three pounds, even if you could find it.

Gave a fun talk at a college of physical education about American culture.  It was nice to deal with a different sort of student for a change - my students are usually quite middle class and polished, perhaps even a bit nerdy.  These future Gym Teachers were a kind of rough-and-tumble slightly hill-billyish lot, very open and funny.

Also, in a typical middle-level Thai university, classes are around 65% girls, and most of the boys are gay or ladyboys - I usually have no more than 1-3 'real boys' per each class of 20-40 students!  At this more countrified college, it was 65% boys, and they were really quite macho/straight for Thais.

I'm still brooding over this girl. I've never been cheated on before

That you know of, Duke.  I suspect that most women 'cheat', particularly the good looking types you no doubt end up with.

I had a world class Bahn Mi yesterday at a small Vietnamese joint across the street from where I am staying in Portland.  Awesome.  $3.95.

Very cool, Grampus.

Can someone tote up my calories for the day?

I had:
1 small Thai Coke (10 oz)
two fried eggs, a small sausage, and toast with butter and marmalade
one coffee with one sugar packet

two glasses white wine
small Caesar salad
Turbot filet with steamed veg and a few fried potatoes with onion
small piece of Brie or similar cheese.
espresso with one sugar

two small pieces of KFC (a wing and a thigh)
7-Up.

Thanks Lief.  I had a feeling it was about a 'maintenance level' intake of calories.  In fact that's a bit heavier eating than I normally do, as I'm on holiday.

I have the flu. I feel like asshole and have no desire to leave my dorm for the next day or two.

It's called you ignore the sickness and power through. Weakness promotes attackers.

Oh good lord, there are no 'attackers', and nobody cares if some callow youth takes a few days off when ill.

I sprained a muscle (ligament) in my foot, and it swelled (not only the foot, but half way up the leg to my knee, some docs thought it infected, some not, and two antibiotic regimes later, and still issues, and surgery in the offing

Good lord, great argument against exercise!

Earlier this week the company I worked for announced their design for the new building in downtown Milwaukee. Demolishing an older, deteriorating building and building the largest, but not the tallest building in the state.

http://urbanmilwaukee.com/2013/09/25/first-look-at-nmls-new-skyscraper/

They're still building things in places like Milwaukee?  Remarkable!
