I was tempted to watch Tron buzzed tonight but decided against it.

The only thing I know about Captain Beefheart is one of the bands I saw at Dude Fest 2007 covered one of his songs.

Which one? My band used to cover "Ashtray Heart".

I'd actually be curious to see what you think about his stuff.

Of course, a lot his albums are wildly different from each other... worth keeping in mind.

Well done but very long.

Also there was a weird James Carville cameo in this. It kind of knocked me out of the movie for a few minutes not unlike when Tyler Perry randomly showed up in Star Trek.

^ I want to see that. It isn't out in the States yet.

True Grit

Very funny. Seriously, there's a lot of good comedy. It wasn't necessarily as epic in terms of being a Western as something like 3:10 to Yuma (2007) but it had a lot going for it in that department too. I didn't care for some of the stuff towards/during the ending though. The unknown, young actress Hailee Steinfeld kind of steals the show. She has a bright future obviously.

Umm... what else? Oh yeah... it's amazing how much violence they can squeeze into a PG-13 movie these days. Seriously, you won't notice it's PG-13 at all. Definitely a good thing.

True Grit.

Pretty good.  Typical Coen Brothers.  Josh Brolin was underused, unfortunately.

Yeah, Brolin himself was barely in the movie at all.

I watched some of this the other day. Unbearably boring. I feel for you if you paid $10 to see it.

The Road

Brilliant. I guess a lot of critics couldn't handle the fact that the end of the world would be, you know, pretty depressing.

The American

Can a film be fascinating and boring at the same time? Tongue

Seriously, a little bit of patience is required but the payoff is quite good. We need more movies like this filtering into the mainstream American consciousness. It also didn't hurt that there were quite a few beautiful women in it.

The Deer Hunter

First time watching this in its entirety. Too long but mostly very good. The first Russian Roulette scene is certainly a strong contender for most intense scene in cinema history.

Really, really racist though. Not that many Vietnam War films aren't, of course.

Right. I'm not hugely bothered by that particular sort of racism though, to be honest.

I'm pretty sure racism was a big factor in the Vietnam War, as it is in all conflicts where different civilizations clash. The RR scenes are controversial though because apparently there are no official reports of anything like that happening during the war.

Interesting but clearly a little overrated.

Children of Men

Awesome. Some of the best camera work I've ever seen in a film, for sure.

Casino

Not a great movie but pretty decent. Pesci is hilarious. Trying to believe that Robert De Niro is a jew requires more of a suspension of disbelief than I can muster though.

The Squid and the Whale

This has been on my list of things to watch for a long time and my brother just happened to find a copy of the DVD for $3 somewhere. It was excellent.

It's almost a de facto prequel to Adventureland as the Jesse Eisenberg character is basically the same. It's just pre-college as opposed to post-college. It's even set in the same time period.

Yeah, that's pretty weird. I didn't even notice that until they went to see Blue Velvet. This movie hit close to home in some ways.

Did you like this or Adventureland better? Pretty tough call for me.

Decent for what it was. The girls looked great. This will probably be on VH1 in a year though.

A ridiculous and fun B-movie (as advertised).

I had no idea the Squid and the Whale was set in the 1980s until I looked it up on Wikipedia after watching it, though it makes sense in retrospect. Good film though.

Yeah, I don't even remember the title card that BRTD speaks of. Maybe I was grabbing something to eat at the time or whatever.

The Green Hornet

I went to the midnight showing because my dad really wanted to see it. It was alright, I guess. It actually did a somewhat decent job of paying tribute to the original radio and TV shows. It also had some funny bits and a few interesting ideas but it also contained a lot of pointless garbage. It was way too long and the 3D, as usual, sucked.
