If I campaign all day Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday, it basically means that I'm buying 30-second spots on prime-time television for one hundred thousand dollars per spot.  Well, okay 400K during a first-run episode of The Simpson's, 40K during a news show, but let's just say 100K for the sake of the argument.  So campaigning means I get 30 seconds of your time every thirty minutes over a four-hour period each of those nights, at a cost of about five million dollars.

On the other hand, if I announce that I "suspend" my campaign...   Well, let's see.  I'll switch to CNN.  Hmmm, they're talking about McCain and "the crisis."  Let's switch to HN.  Okay, they're trying to sell me some Levitra.  But I bet when I come back in two minutes they'll be trying to sell me 700 billion dollars worth of junk that I don't need.  Let's switch to Fox.  Oh, jackpot, baybee.  They're talking about the "unprecedented action by McCain..."  Let's switch to MSNBC.  Buchanan's on Butch and they're talking about whether McCain is "putting off the populist faction of his base..."  And Butch has used the word "suspended" about five times in the last twenty seconds.  Frankly, I think she totally understands what he's up to.

You get the picture.  If he campaigns, it costs him millions for a few reminders of his existence.  Reminders that I may or may not see, depending on how often I need to refill my glass.  Or how often I need take a dump.  (more often than usual, what with all this talk of a taxpayer-funded bailout of financial institutions.)  But if he "suspends" his campaigns, then he gets wall-to-wall, around-the-clock coverage.  Gratis.

Genius or suicide?  Only time will tell, but he was very clever bastard, wasn't he.
