Weicker should run as a Democrat and challenged Joe in the primary rather than as an independent.  Lieberman's lowest approval numbers actually come from Democrats, so Weicker would have done best among the liberals than any other voting bloc.
Weicker would never run as a Dem though.

I agree on both points.  The latter is unfortunate, and even still, I'm hoping that Weicker runs in the general.
