Vaguely aware of 1972 but very aware of and into 1976.

1972.  I remember Mom and Dad arguing about it.  They both voted for Nixon in 1968.  But Dad had buyer's remorse after about six months and he voted for McGovern in 1972.  Mom adored Nixon and still does.  She thinks he was "framed" by the liberal media.
