I don't find it that surprising or weird at all. Many GOP voters (especially in the South) have been searching for a credible candidate that has and will will continue to support conservative Evangelical values. Huckabee is really the only candidate who lives up to their expectations in that regard. Also, the fact that his record on economic issues is so much further left than the other candidates is a testament the amount of power this group has obtained within the GOP ranks.
