Valkyrie.

I had no idea that they advanced so far.  I mean, I knew they blew up a table, but the rest of the plot...

I liked Slumdog.  I can see why it was nominated.  The Bollywood credit sequence seemed out of place.

Towelhead.

Reminded me of Welcome to the Dollhouse. Nowhere near as brilliant obviously, but still good. The title and trailer are misleading though, racial bigotry is a pretty minor part of the movie.

Yes and no.  I mean, the whole reason she had to hide her relationship with the black guy was due to her dad's racism.  Actually, the whole reason she had to hide everything from her father was a mixture of his racism and misogyny.

The bit where that liberal family takes her in and the dad tells off her father in Arabic struck me as pretty absurd.

Just watched "Match Point", the Woody Allen movie, the other night - really enjoyed it.

You just liked it that the main character got away with murder.

Friend of mine rented Tropic Thunder, and I watched it with her.  I didn't recognize Tom Cruise until she said, "I f**king hate Tom Cruise."  Really liked the movie.

Frankly, what they did to Cruise in terms of makeup was even more impressive than what they did to Robert Downey Jr.

Does that look like Tom Cruise to you?

Believe it or not, Bridget Jones: The Edge of Reason.  A friend of mine was having a movie night and I had no say in the movie selection.

Not as bad as I'd anticipated.  All right, I'll say it: I liked it.

I just killed my rep, didn't I?

The rumor is that they want Javier Bardem for the role. That would just be too awesome for words.

That would be enough to make me actually see the movie.  Javier Bardem is an excellent actor in anything.

Did you actually watch Love in the Time of Cholera?

No, actually.  I didn't even know there was a movie version (I have read the book).  I'm guessing by your comment that it was horrible?

A few weeks back, but I didn't bother posting it:  Sunshine Cleaning.

I'm soft on films like this, so I'll give it an 8.5/10.  It probably deserves a lower score, but I'm sympathetic to it.

So you're a chick flick fan?

That was a chick flick?  One of the two couples was homosexual (female) and the other was an affair.  Neither worked out.  Hardly a romantic film.

That said, I do like (intelligent) chick flicks.  Stupid ones don't do anything for me no matter how hot the actresses, just like stupid action films don't do anything for me no matter how impressive the special effects.

Seemed like it to me from the trailer. Really though it is a chick flick in the most literal sense, female writer, director and two female leads.

I guess.  Maybe it's old-fashioned of me, but when I hear "chick flick" I think of female protagonists trying to get "the guy" and avoid falling for "the other guy."  Making one of the lead characters a lesbian makes it very hard to think of it as a chick flick.

"That girl over there.  Purple sweater.  You know, Yum-Yum."

I never thought I'd see the day there'd be a Gilbert & Sullivan reference in a Clint Eastwood movie.

All the President's Men.

Really liked it. Very exciting, for a movie about newspaper reporters. The acting was superb and I really enjoyed the directing as well, with a lot of very interesting shots. The splicing in of historical footage and news reports was also done well (though, at the time, I suppose the footage wasn't that historical, having happened only a few years before).

It cuts off way early in the story.  Read the book.

BTW, knowing who Deep Throat is sort of undermines it.

What did you think?

Bruno - It was funnier than Borat, but it had more moments to cringe at also.

Seeing it Monday evening.  I'm excited.

Untraceable

Meh.  Pretty dull, actually.

At the theater, Public Enemies.  I loved it.  But I am a sucker for gangster films and any kind of movie set in the past.

I liked Public Enemies, but didn't love it.

Waltz With Bashir.

A bit too pro-Israel, but rather good. Of course all the Zionists on this forum would hate it.

I thought I'd love it, but I gave up on it about an hour in.  It was much, much darker than I'd imagined.

Saw Persepolis (2007) finally.  Really liked it.

500 Days of Summer, finally.  Excellent.  Like a latter-day Annie Hall.

The Last Picture Show (1971). Peter Bogdanovich. Timothy Bottoms. Jeff Bridges. Cybill Shepard.

This is the story of a dying small town in west Texas in 1951-1952, and the human difficulties in coping with that change. A low key, melancholy realism. If made today it probably would not gross much, but in its time was nominated for eight academy awards including Best Picture.

I've read the book, never seen the movie.

The Men Who Stare at Goats

The book was better.  Jon Ronson's a fantastic author.

That aside, the movie's really good.

Well, the only stuffs to be noticed here are the presences of Hillary Swank and especially Scarlett Johanson in 40s looking...

In short a film in costumes in which you mainly notice that this is a film in costumes...

Well, it was the golden age for blondes with cherry-red lipstick, and Scarlett is designed for that look.

Die Hard

I hadn't see this original before. I now understand why this one of Naso's favourites. And I don't mean that in a good way.

Alan Rickman's in it, though.  That bumps any movie up several notches in my book.  I doubt I'd have liked Perfume as much as I did without those gorgeous bass tones his voice makes rippling through my ears...he has the best voice in Hollywood.  I feel like I can just drown in that man's voice.

Read the book.  The movie takes so many liberties you wouldn't believe.

Shrek: The Final Chapter - Wow.  This movie was absolutely amazing.  It was nothing but laughs from start to finish, and a really great way to finish the series.  I loved it.

Finish?

There'll be more Shrek movies.

Nah, this is the last one.

$$$

$$$ that isn't there due to the extremely high cost of making the films (as pointed out by BRTD).

I've seen the first three, should I see this one?  (Eric Idle's cameo really carried the last one for me.  I'd see him in anything.)

It's a really weird thing, how even a movie not directly about WWII sees some need to promote the cult of Churchill, even by 100% reversing his IRL stances.

Great movie if you can get past that.
