Probably was a pretty party-line Democrat, and still usually votes for the Democrats. I'd say he's sort of a moderate Democratic, left on most economic issues and center to center-right on most social issues. Though he liked some aspects of Trump's platform, he had some personal conflicts with Trump stemming from his days in the construction industry, and he felt he Trump wasn't up to the job/not a real populist. He left his Presidential ballot blank in 2016. The last time he considered voting for a Republican for President was in 2004, as he was a strong supporter of the Iraq War, but he did ultimately vote for Kerry.

If he were a Catholic, or even a Protestant who wasn't a literal Orangeman, a semi-retired farmer and auctioneer from Cavan would be an easy Fianna Fail voter, but as it is, who knows? My guess is he probably cycles through various minor crankish right-wing outfits, although he might currently see Fine Gael as a lesser evil because it's less explicitly republican/nationalist than the other major parties.

That's pretty much what I was thinking. My general understanding is that most Protestants in Ireland are fairly Fine Gael, and all Protestants elected recently (I know only of Seymour Crawford, off the top of my head, a Presbyterian who represented Cavan—Monaghan) have been Fine Gael. The character was actually loosely based on John James Cole and to a lesser extent his son John Copeland Cole, who were Orangemen (both were Grand Master of the Cavan Lodge) from County Cavan that served in the Oireachtas as independents, the father as a TD and the son as a Senator (nominated by de Valera and Lemass, actually). Former Unionists and Protestants stuck in the south seem quite interesting as a demographic.
