I suppose there is an element of that, but even so, there was some Conservative support for nationalisation of industries in a very bad state. Churchill supported coal nationalisation for example.

MacDonald was one of the more right wing Labour members, and also, he had to work pragmatically because of the lack of strength in Parliament.
