Democratic primaries:
1960: John F. Kennedy 1964: Lyndon B. Johnson by default. 1968: Robert F. Kennedy. Eugene McCarthy or George McGovern at the convention. 1972: George McGovern. The others are either awful or just bland (with the exception of Chisholm perhaps, though I still would have preferred McGovern). 1976: Frank Church with Brown as a close second. 1980: Edward M. Kennedy 1984: Alan Cranston 1988: What a mediocre bunch. Seriously, this has to be the worst Democratic primary field ever. Most of the candidates were either tainted by scandal (Hart, Biden, Jackson) or unexciting (Dukakis, Gore, Babbitt, Gephardt). That leaves Simon then, but it would be without much enthusiasm. 1992: Jerry Brown was the best of this bunch. 1996: Bill Clinton by default 2000: Bill Bradley 2004: Dennis Kucinich. Of the 'serious' contenders - Dean. 2008: Dennis Kucinich again. Obama out of the final two. 2012: Barack Obama by default
