After the Death of President Roosevelt, now President Harry Truman has had lots of bad luck while in office. The Economy is in a on and off cycle since the end of WW2, and the economy was in a recession in 1945-1947.

The Peace plans were not going good in Asia, with trouble brewing in Korea, and still fallout was around from the the two  Atomic Bombs dropped on Japan in 1945. The United States and The USSR's relations have dropped significantly since WW2, especially with division of Postwar Germany. The United States was also involved in Middle East issues, sparking anger over the urge to go back the Isolationist ways of the past. "This Country should always be prepared for the worst, we don't need another Pearl Harbor" Said President Truman in a Radio address in 1947.

Because of all This, The Republicans won The House of Representatives for the first time since the 1920's, and the field for the Republican nomination started to increase. The Favorite was former Nominee and Governor of NY Thomas E. Dewey. Also Running was Senator Robert  Taft, Former Governor Harold Stassen, and the Governor of California Earl Warren. But, Former Candidate Wendell Wilkie was expected to run, but declined and Endorsed Dewey for President.

Former Canidate Wilkie, now Dewey's main help.

As for the Democrats, President Truman was favored to win, but at the convention Truman faced no opposition when General Dwight D. Eisenhower declined to run. But, the southern delegates disagreed with his Civil Rights policy and Walked out on the Convention, creating the Southern Dixiecrat party. Truman was nominated eventually and selected Senator Alben Barkley of Kentucky, which angered more Southern Delagates. Truman also gave the first Convention selection speech on the new field of Television, and looked uncomfortable with it. The public who watched were disappointed with Truman and his ratings went down.

The Democratic Nominee for President.

The Dixiecrat's nominated Governor Storm Thurmond of South Carolina at their convention, and he selected Governor Fielding Right of Mississippi as his VP.

The States Rights or "Dixiecrat" nominees for President and Vice President.

Next Up, The Republican Convention.......

While i remember let me explain what's different in this TL.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------

1. Wendell Wilkie quits smoking after his near fatal Heart Attack. He never campaigns openly for Roosevelt, and stays popular with the Republicans.

2. The Recession of 1945 lasts through 1947.

3. The Republicans gain control of the house and have a huge majority, but The Democrats lead by three seats in the Senate.

4. Not all of the Southern Delagates leave. Only a few stay.

5. Alben Barkley wants to run with the Dixiecrats, but stays with the Dems once most of Kentucky's delegates stay.

6. No Henry Wallace candidacy
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

if there is more i will remember to post it for people who ar econfused.

Goob job so far. The most realistic way for Dewey to win wold be to campaign more energetically, respond to Truman's attacks, and offer specific ideas for the country instead of vague statements.

Thanks, expect an more energetic Dewey

The 1948 Republican Convention

The Final convention of the election season, the Republican convention was a show to every since of the word. Including lot's of Theatrics including elephants walking around, movie starts, and the Republican Orchestra band. The Convention was also full of Drama.

The convention featured two different Republican sides going against each other, The Liberal Progressives, and The Conservatives. Thomas E. Dewey was the main candidate of the Liberal Progressives, while Senator Taft was the leader of the Conservative fraction. Then there was candidates in the middle, Like Harold Stassen, and Earl Warren. The First ballot ended with Dewey having a slight lead, as was the second ballot.

Before the third ballot, Wendell Wilkie gave a roaring speech, which helped to gain support for Dewey. After the speech. Stassen made a deal with Dewey to give the Governor his delegates, and in return he would get his endorsement. This helped Dewey who won on the fifth Ballot.

The Republican Candidate for President

For His Vice President Choice, Dewey selected no other than Wendell Wilkie, who was nominated on the second Ballot over Arthur Vanderburg. In his acceptance speech Dewey set forth his goals for America which was well received by the Public, and was the more popular of the two candidates on Television.

With this, the election season was set up:

Democratic Party- Truman/Barkley

Republican Party- Dewey/Wilkie

Dixiecrat party- Thurmond/Wright

Interesting. RL 1948 Republican ticket Dewey/Warren was all-liberal too. But even if here Willkie lived beyond 1944, we may see, given his heart issues, the Vice Presidency in vacancy soon.

Yeah, expect some Constitutional amendments in here too

Election 1948

The election of 1948 was an interesting affair. The election fielded three candidates, but only two with a serious chance of winning. Thurmond  controlled the south, while the rest of the country was up for grabs.

"This country demands a change of Leadership. Heck, even the rest of the world agrees with us. Let's head out on election day and make it happen." Said by Governor Dewey in Kansas. The Governor toured all 50 states more than once, and even created ads for the new field of Television, which gained support for the Republicans.  Dewey, Wilkie, and Stassen campaigns massively for the Republican Ticket.

Dewey campaigning in Queens

"This country does not need the special interests of the Republicans, and America does not need the Boom and Bust cycle of the 20's." Said By President Truman in West Virginia. President Truman had to campaign to make up lots of lost ground. But, on his part, he took lots of rest compared to Governor Dewey, who spent most of his time on the trail campaining.

Truman campaining in Pennslyvania

On election night it was not even close.

Dewey Dominated Truman, even winning traditional Democratic States. Thurmond finished third after winning the south, who Truman ran off with his Civil Rights views.

President Truman happily acknowledging his loss.

President Truman Happily accepted the defeat, promising to keep his hand in American Politics some how. Dewey and Wilkie accepted their Victory, "Promising a new America for a new world". With this how will the new leadership do?

With the election season now over, President-Elect Dewey was hard at work to choose his cabinet, and the Governor selected Harold Stassen as his Secretary of State.

Here's his picks:

Secretary of State: Harold Stassen

Secretary of Defense: Henry Cabot Lodge

Secretary of Treasury: Joesph W. Martin

Attorney General: John Foster Dulles

Postmaster General- Robert F. Wagner

Secretary of the Interior- William F. Knowland

Secretary of Labor- Francis Perkins

Secretary of Agriculture- Ralph O. Brewster

Secretary of Commerce- Edward Martin

The picks received attention when Dewey announce that Former Secretary of labor Perkins will return, as well as Ralph Brewster, who is  a controversial Senator. But, The President-elect believes in his picks "What our Country needs is people who are ready to work for change, and i believe these people are ready to do that".

The Inauguration of President-Elect Dewey- January 20th,1949

The Inauguration of President Dewey was an affair for the ages. The first Inauguration shown on Television, President Dewey was an natural for TV. While President Truman was humble, and hardheaded when TV's were around, President Dewey seamed Down to Earth, and fancy individual.

Vice President Wilkie took his oath first, followed by President Dewey. In his Inaugural address, President Dewey set fourth his goals for a new America:

1. A new Federal Undercover Agency to Monitor American and keep it safe.

2. A new Agency to Monitor Radio Broadcasts for Anti-American content

3. Reduction of the public debt

4. Federal aid to states for slum clearance and low-cost housing

5. Extension of Social Security benefits

6. A federal anti-lynching law

7. Federal civil rights legislation

8. Abolition of the poll tax

9. A crackdown on domestic Communism

10. Recognition of the state of Israel

11. International arms control "on basis of reliable disciplines against bad faith".

With all of this set ahead of himself, can the New President Get this legislation passed? Or will he be sidetracked and go down in flames?

After getting inaugurated as the 34th President, President Dewey was ready to get to work.

In his first two weeks, the President Worked on his Federal Budget. The budget included mass cuts on the remaining new deal program's spending except for Social Security, which was increased and expanded. The Military Budget was slightly reduced as well. The Democrats were opposed to the Budget due to cuts in New Deal programs, but President  Dewey argued back saying, "The Country is ready to move on. I believe that the remaining Programs still work, but America is ready for new programs." The Budget passed unanimously in the house, but barely in the Senate.

The first Foreign Policy success of the Dewey administration was the Ratification of the NATO treaty through Congress, which established a Military partnership with countries from North America and Europe. This was the second partnership the United States joined since WW2 after joining the United Nations.

The President also appointed two justices to the supreme court, John Bricker and one of his former Lieutenant  Governor Joe. R Haney. Both were approved, which helped to add conservative Judges to the court.

Also, The CIA was created after the bill creating it was approved in Congress. President Dewey named Current  Central Intelligence leader Roscoe H. Hillenkoetter as Director of the CIA.

But, President Dewey was also looking at a growing situation Asia. The Deals made with China and the USSR come back to haunt the US, with North Korea growing into an Communist nation, which cause unrest all over the world and at the UN. The Issue may come back to haunt the young President.

Will Dewey manage the war, or will it cost him his Presidency?

This is really good so far. With Dewey in the White House and Hanley on the Supreme Court, who became the Governor of New York?

My assumption is likely wrong, but I think the State Senate Majority Leader would be elevated (there was two in 1949) after Hanley leaves office. The next gubernatorial election was 1950, so this timeline might see four different New York governors in two years if Harriman gets elected four years early!

Arthur H. Hicks becomes Governor. Thanks for the praise!

International Struggles:
-------------------------------------------------------------

President Dewey, a well known Anti-Communist, believed in a Anti-Communist World. But, The President struggled to achieve this. The Chinese Civil War was coming to an end, with Mao Zedong taking over as the The leader of now communist China. This was a major blow to anti-communists all over the world. Especially after  defeating Japan in World War 2, the Country believed the fighting in Asia was over. But, China now working with The Soviet Union, was now the opposing force in the World.

The Premier of China, Mao Zedong

China began to act like former foe's Germany when the Country invaded and Took Over North Korea, turning it into  a Communist Nation. The United Nations, including the United States were angry, the Chinese and the soviet Union violated their peace promises. After repeated failure by the two countries to give up North Korea, The United Nations declared War on China and The USSR. The Korean War has begun.

President Dewey order an emergency address to the American people. "The actions of the Communist in China and The Soviet Union is evil and must be stopped. The fate of the world is in our hands, and i will intend to do all i can to face adversity in the face, and to stop the evil leaders before it's too late. Now, we need your help, Men need to join the armed forces, women need to contribute with work, items must be rationed,  and everyone can pray for our great Union. Thank you, and god bless our troops, and our country."

Public support, was strong despite public hate for war. The Army recruited 3 million men and women despite having their budget slashed. The Economy stayed strong, despite lessing purchase and more military items.

With the War starting, and the Mid Term elections in a few Months, how will President dewey react?

Let's to 52', because The Korean War goes the same as in RL.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------

President Dewey has had tons of Bad luck since 1950. The Korean War is in a stalemate, with either side making any advances. General Douglas MacArthur, who was dismissed after bad mouthing the President  over Dewey's refusal to use Atomic Weapons to end the war.

The economy was also in bad shape. The post war economy collapsed after the war, mainly due to due to increased government spending due to the Korean War. Average Prices increased to highs not seen since the Great depression. The public began to lose faith in the current administration.

The Democrats looking forward to the 1952 election, began to look for different candidates. Democratic Party leaders, who wanted  an established candidate, went after former President Harry S. Truman. But, he refused to run, but will endorse a candidate for President.

Former President Truman refusing to run.

The Democrats need  a exciting field of Candidates to make their hopes increase, and they get it, and an exciting Primary season.....
