All right, I can suspend my disbelief no longer. Was Dole elected in 1996 or 2012?

In 1996, Mitch Daniels is a relatively obscure businessman, John Hoeven is the president of the Bank of North Dakota, and Scott Walker is a second-term State Assemblyman.

In 2012, Dole is 89 years old, and George Deukmejian is 84 years old and has been out of office for over 20 years.

I though Daniels was on the shortlist for Treasury Secretary in 2000? I thought he was a state senator or something. I guess I should of researched him better. I cannot explain Walker, though.

After reading the Wikipedia article more thoroughly, Daniels is feasible. He served as Chief of Staff to Senator Richard Lugar, Executive Director of the National Republican Senatorial Committee, and chief political advisor and liaison to President Reagan, in addition to his private sector experience.

I still can't see Hoeven or Walker as cabinet members in 1997, though.

In these types of things, sometimes you have to think outside the box. I would guess that the intent was for a bipartisan or (probably more accurately) moderate cabinet. Instead of thinking in terms of our current political spectrum, think of it in terms of a big tent, centrist party being elected over extremists on both sides.
