Ah, Atlanta - the Diamond of Dixie and capital of the "New South"
A fascinating city with a rich history that has become a world-class metropolis in its own right. Atlanta has long been to the South what New York is to the Northeast or Chicago to the Midwest - a place for the young and bright to come, learn, live and create: the concrete realization of the dreams of generations of fine Southern men and women. And as the South has risen again so has Atlanta's prominence - from the Olympics, to Coca-Cola, Delta Air Lines and Ludacris - Atlanta is a city that has gone from being quintessentially Southern to being quintessentially American.
While you're there I would definitely check out the Carter Center, its one of my favorites. Cool neighborhoods to visit would be Midtown, Virginia Highland (VaHi), the area around Emory, Tech Square, and Old Fourth Ward (or O4W, the Deep South equivalent of NYC's Williamsburg). The BeltLine and Ponce City Market are worth the time too. However, don't expect Savannah or New Orleans-type architecture (Sherman burned it all to the ground), but I don't think that kind of Old World look would serve a city as modern as Atlanta properly anyway.
