So he's out for 2016. Given his previous comments about elective leadership, he'll be retired at 50.

Can't do both simultaneously, nor is he the type to try. It would look pretty bad if he jumped over someone more senior (whose name escapes me ATM) just to get a title which he had no intention of really using. After getting a rarer-than-unicorns waiver for Budget last year. Even though he said he'll "take a hard look at it" after the midterms, that probably meant no. No prep, no campaigning apart from one Branstad event, no political people, etc. But it still begs the question of why he accepted Veep if he didn't at least entertain the WH thought at one point.

Here's a Hill article saying the same thing. Family is also a major factor. His allies don't rule out a future run but by then he'll be a figure of the past rather than present, particularly after W&M is up. Looks like he'll retire at 50 after all.
