GOP Presidential Candidate Rick Santorum appears on "Meet The Press"



David Gregory: You've been grilled by Democrats and Independents alike for your so-called "Un-American" views on issues such as gay rights, abortion and the like. How do plan to win over Independents and disgruntled Democrats?

Rick Santorum: David, I don't want to focus my campaign on social issues. Of course social issues are important to some Americans, but our economy is in shambles and I want to run a campaign based on how I plan to fix the economy. That's something that Independents, Democrats and I can all agree on: President Obama must stop the frivolous spending if we are to prosper as a nation.

Gregory: You have also been criticized for your involvement in the creation of Medicare Part D, what do you say to people who criticize you about that?

Santorum: Medicare Part D made prescription drugs more affordable for America's senior citizens and so I will defend my involvement in the creation of it, because it was necessary for America at the time and it still is.

Gregory: What is your opinion of "Obamacare"?

Santorum: It needs to be repealed and replaced with a plan that will benefit Americans as well as the economy. Obamacare has killed jobs and will continue to kill jobs unless we repeal it and replace it with a more sensible law.

Gregory: You were criticized on the campaign trail for taking plenty of earmarks for your own state, what would you like to say regarding those criticisms?

Santorum: Well my biggest opponent on this issue was Governor Rick Perry, who has given millions of dollars to lobbyists and other Washington-based crooks. Look, was I a perfect Senator? Of course not. I made some mistakes. But I am the most morally pristine candidate in this race and I will stand by that proclamation.

I still can't understand this.. So, Santorum is trailing by 9 (nationally), yet leads Obama in Nevada,  a state which Obama carried by 13 points in 2008 (not to talk about Wisconsin, which he carried by 14)
