Compass:

You are a left social libertarian.
Left: 3.7, Libertarian: 5.9

Foreign Policy:

On the left side are pacifists and anti-war activists. On the right side are those who want a strong military that intervenes around the world. You scored: -5.88

Culture:

Where are you in the culture war? On the liberal side, or the conservative side? This scale may apply more to the US than other countries. You scored: -8.92

Progressivism     100
Socialism            75
Tenderness         50

Your test scores indicate that you are an open-minded ultra-progressive; this is the political profile one might associate with a journalist. It appears that you are skeptical towards religion, and have a generally optimistic attitude towards humanity in general. Your attitudes towards economics appear socialist, and combined with your social attitudes this creates the picture of someone who would generally be described as a humanist. To round out the picture you appear to be, political preference aside, a sensible radical egalitarian with an established worldview.

West

You are a Westerner-a civil libertarian-which means that you advocate a diminished role for the government in the personal realm. You are more or less pleased the government's role in the economic realm. (Wait what? O.o)

DENVER!

You scored 20% Style, 21% Climate, and 41% Culture!

You are Denver, Colorado. Denver is the largest city in Colorado, the state capital, and the seat of Denver County. It lies at the foot of the Rocky Mountains at the junction of the South Platte River and Cherry Creek. Today, Denver is an important communications, transportation, manufacturing, and agribusiness hub. Telecommunications and biomedical technology are two of the largest industries; construction, real estate, and retail trade are among the fastest-growing industries. The city is also home to many environmental organizations, including federal government agencies such as the Environmental Protection Agency and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration.

Hm, probably not very interesting to you since you're a little low on the 'culture' scale. You don't like heat much, and prefer cool weather and a landscape filled with majestic mountains. You may not be one for city life, and prefer a slower pace. You are sporty and adventurous, but not one to partake in typical 'higher class' activities, like the opera, and that's just fine. Not all culture is bad though, and you might even find that you enjoy a good play now and then if you give it a chance.

Out of 25 U.S. Presidents, you are the most like ...

Abraham Lincoln

Compared to the general population, you are:

More likely to think that international cooperation will solve foreign policy problems.
Less likely to take an active interest in your community, preferring instead to go your own way.
More likely to be cosmopolitan in tastes and less likely to be patriotic and proud of your country.
Less likely to enjoy romantic fiction than the rest of the population.
Less likely to have a tolerant attitude towards smoking.
More likely to favor harsh criminal punishments over milder ones.
Less likely to watch TV and read the news, preferring instead to follow your own interests.
Less likely to mobilize your friends in your own interests, preferring instead to immerse yourself in
           your interests in solitude.
Someone who seems impassive to others, while being in fact quite sure of your own views.
Less likely to frequently change jobs and partners.
Less likely to end up in jail or to get in trouble with the law.
More likely to generally agree with your immediate friends and family.
More likely to simply avoid people who are hostile to you, or with whom you are in disagreement.
More likely to oppose capital punishment.
More likely to take a favorable view of government welfare programs.
Less likely to enjoy fitness training and physical exercise.
Less likely to believe in any kind of dogma that you regard as settled in stone.

The Latte-sipping Liberal

50% Utilitarian, 38% Nationalist, 67% Liberal, and 34% Individualist!

You live in or near an urban area, don't you? You probably think of the people who love God and country as rank idiots. In fact, you aren't really much of a nationalist at all; but you transfer your nationalism into a firm conviction that your convictions are of perfect objectivity and describe exactly the real world, and anyone who doesn't believe them must either be lying or simply not as smart as you are.  You support democracy and a social safety net (but probably not large-scale wealth redistribution, as that would likely affect yourself).  You are similar to Howard Dean, Nancy Pelosi, and George McGovern.

Your best fit is... Solid Liberal

Generally affluent and highly educated, most Solid Liberals strongly support the social safety net and take very liberal positions on virtually all issues. Most say they always vote Democratic and are unflagging supporters of Barack Obama. Overall, Solid Liberals are very optimistic about the nation’s future and are the most likely to say that America’s success is linked to its ability to change, rather than its reliance on long-standing principles. On foreign policy, Solid Liberals overwhelmingly believe that good diplomacy – rather than military strength – is the best way to ensure peace.

89%

According to James Burnam, you would be classified as a conservative. More than likely, you believe in some forms of legal egalitarianism -- to an extent --, but believe that traditional values or economic liberal rights are more important than any strong notion of socio-economic equality.

lol

This result is probably from questions answered for reasons not anticipated by the test's creator. There were no choices available for opposing: violence against children, censorship around children, duty only to the males of our species around the world, and disenfranchisement of felons and the mentally ill. To reject the offensive positions I had to answer no to questions meant to see whether I was egalitarian in values.

Sorry, I linked to the wrong quiz. Fixed.

No worries, thanks! The new results then are:

81% - Verts - The Greens - (Les Verts)

Environmentalist party founded in 1982 with the merger of center-left liberal Ecologist Party and Ecologist Confederation. It is very close the UK or US green party on its platform. Verts was a junior party in Jospin's coalition of 1997-2002 and Also in Hollande's coalition in 2012.

74% - MoDem - Democratic Movement - (Mouvement démocrat)
67% - PS - Socialist Party - (Parti socialiste)
61% - Left Front-Front de Gauche+PCF - French Communist
51% - Union of Democrats and Independants
40% - UMP - Union for a Popular Movement - (Union pour u)
19% - DLR-French Gaullists
0% - FN - National Front - (Front National)

If I had to guess I'd say that aversion to nationalizations and a balance of liberal and socialist economic considerations raised the MoDem rating. Left Front and Verts candidates are the most appealing to me.

10 authority, 16 economy

Liberal. A well-regulated market economy and an accountable representative democracy will do you just fine, thank you very much. No need for a radical overhaul of the system, but you'd like to see some reforms to protect the people who are marginalized by it.

Probably because I answered slightly less radically towards the market questions.

Yeah, likewise I think.

Just wanted to add in my new Political Compass test result:

Economic Left/Right: -9.88
Social Libertarian/Authoritarian: -10.00

Getting a -10 social means you believe in astrology (one of many reasons why the PC is terrible).

Actually, I think that makes you more authoritarian. It has to do with predetermined destinies of something ridiculous like that.

Which is an even better reason why Political Compass sucks.

A thread about Political Compass was a non-political forum I visit. It was depressing to see people take the results as gospel.

It makes sense to me, actually. Faith in astrology is irrational, reflects a lack of independent thought tempered with efforts to actually go fact-hunting, and thus a vulnerability to the smoke and mirrors demagoguery and manipulative rhetoric that social dominators use to win over hearts and minds of authoritarian followers. The more libertarian types of folk tend to be are more skeptical, seem likelier to see through such rubbish, and carefully build their own worldviews rather than just trust someone else.

The trouble here is that some self-described libertarians are very susceptible to authoritarian ideas but it just so happens that their trusted authority figures and sources of moral authority have told 'em that the government is untrustworthy, that American values include self-reliance and U.S. exceptionalism, etc. Positions matter, that is to say but so, too, do the underlying rationales for them.

On the whole I have to agree with you that it isn't a great test.

To round out the picture you appear to be, political preference aside, a sensible radical centrist with several strong convictions.

WTF does that last sentence mean? Huh

I would assume it means somebody who is pragmatic and wants to get at the roots of what appears to be wrong with society, yet does not neatly fit into traditional descriptions of either the left or right. Libertarians, mutualists, syndicalists, Christian socialists, fascists, and a few other groups may sometimes be challenging to place on a one-dimensional political spectrum. The sentence is very awkwardly worded though and I am not sure whether the results apply very well. You'd be in a much better position to make that judgement. xD

Your match is James A. Garfield.

James A. Garfield was raised in poverty in rural Ohio after his father died. Yet he overcame this upbringing to become a remarkably lettered man. He was able to write in Latin with one hand and ancient Greek with the other, both at the same time. He was quiet and modest, yet very agreeable. He was the type of man to hug friends when he ran into them, or to touch people's shoulders as he talked. He also had a bit of a neurotic streak, suffering periods of depression. He also saw foreboding visions in his dreams. Strangely, given these traits, he actually was assassinated.

You are also similar to Abraham Lincoln and Barack Obama.

You are least similar to Andrew Jackson.
