I initially supported Ron Paul in 2007, before taking an American history class and realizing that libertarianism is garbage and that identifying with a Republican made me sick to my stomach because I'm from a family of union Democrats.
After that (and a heavy dose of A People's History of the United States), I started supporting Mike Gravel, although I also liked Dennis Kucinich. As the field narrowed, I backed John Edwards (I remember buying campaign buttons of his and being really invested in him as the only populist candidate in the race; plus his being endorsed by the USW, my dad's union, really raised him in my eyes) and then when Edwards exited, I decided to support Barack Obama, because there was no way in hell I was going to support Hillary for President. I did actually attend two Hillary rallies in 2008, mostly to say that I had done so, but never ended up going for her, because holy f**k I could never live with myself if I supported her for President.
I wasn't old enough to vote in 2008 (thank god), but if I had been, I'd have almost certainly voted for Obama in the 2008 Democratic Party primary here in Kentucky. I'm glad I don't have that to look back in regret on, although unfortunately I have a vote for Obama in 2012 that I cringe at every time I remember it. I'm never voting for another Democrat.
