One of the interesting exercises we had to do in high school English was write papers following an arbitrary set of rules that included forbidding us to use infinitives, linking verbs, a collection of words that were deemed poor writing, such as the adjective "good", or start sentences with pronouns. It wasn't necessarily the best way to write but it forced everyone to be really aware of how they were constructing sentences.
