I ask that question, because that's the only reason I can think of why Mitt keeps saying if you think the economy is improving, vote for Obama.  I understand that it's obviously intended for the current primary campaign, as Republicans are more likely to think Obama is mucking up the economy than independents or Democrats are. However, if the economy continues to keep improving as expected between now and November, he's handed Obama a ready-made campaign commercial with which to bash Romney with.  Conversely, if the economy does go down again, then it probably doesn't matter too much who the Republican nominee is.

Just another example of why Mitt is not the candidate that the GOP needs this year.

is the economy actually doing better for the median American

Unemployment is slowly improving, and assuming we don't get a shock to the system that rate of improvement should continue to increase.  It won't be a stellar economy by November, but I expect it will be good enough to beat Mitt if he runs on the economy.
