Maybe he didn't campaign much there. Iowa isn't really his kind of state, is it?

McCain did largely ignore the Iowa caucuses to focus on the New Hampshire primary.  It paid off for him big time.  
It's interesting that Clark and Lieberman attempted to follow that same strategy this year. Clearly 2004 was not like 2000 in the primaries.

I wouldn't be so sure. In 2000 the winner in Iowa became the eventual nominee. Just like this year...
