They're children, not adults.  The whole reason society makes them go to school is to educate them and instill the values of the society... This is no different.  Love of country doesn't just appear out of nowhere,, it's not magical.  It takes hard work and instilling it in future generations.
Shunning children who choose not to recite the pledge does nothing to instill the values of our society in those children. Quite the contrary, actually.
