So, this is a way for us to compile information on crime in the nation and keep the public in the loop?

Yes. And easier to do given current technology. It is not designed to let people see that Mr Smith stole from Mr Jones, but to give an indication of where crime hotspots are. This is something the police should be aware of, but it also helps community and voluntary groups target their resources within their neighbourhood.

Is there anything being done on this too? If nothing is said or proposed by tomorrow morning I'm opening up the final vote.

I probably should have commented on Badger's post, my apologies.

By 'a criminal investigation' it was intended that specific targeted investigations, like a local drugs bust etc would be excluded. I am aware that statistics are compliled to be used by the police in general, but I disagree with Badger that it would mean that all data would be excluded (I've based the wording of this on the scheme that now operates in London) and I'm not sure if I could word it differently.

However I will propose an amendment-

Identifying Crime Bill

Section 1: Law enforcement departments shall make publically available all collected crime data excepting;

a. Data that shall directly or indirectly identify the victim of each crime.
b. Data that is being collected by law enforcement agencies for the purposes of a criminal investigation.
b. Data that has been collected by law enforcement agencies for the purposes of a scheduled or ongoing criminal trial by jury.

Section 2: Crime data shall be compiled, analysed and disseminated to the public in written and visual format for each ZIP Code Tabulation Area.

Section 3: Collected data shall be released by law enforcement agencies into the public domain, subject to the exceptions outlined in Section 1, at least four weeks after it has been recorded

Section 4: The Senate shall appropriate $50million for the development and support of online mapping and visual display to made available to the public.

Next to nothing; this is information that the police routinely gather and will often make public but in a less user friendly form. The only cost is to set up the software to allow ease of use access for the public.
