Part of me feels that's way too much money, another part feels that we should put more in because infrastructure is a wonderful think. Is that enough money to electrify the Bergen County Line of NJ Transit?
I'm reading $1.5 million per mile (1). There are 1001 miles operated by NJ Transit. 264 miles of catenaries, so 737 non-electrified miles (2). That works out to $1.105 billion for all of NJ Transit's rail operations. I hope Governor Scott is willing to consider this possibility. At such costs, electrification in other states seems possible for under $10 billion. At this rate we can also replace some tunnels and build some overpasses. For example, a widened tunnel would be useful
here.
But getting infrastructure built near my parents' house is not the point. But we can also get funds for the replacement of the Tappan Zee Bridge? In short, this is a lot of money we'd be issuing, enough to destroy our surplus. These would all be nice things, but I don't think so much is needed for mere repairs.
