President Angela Merkel (R-LA): Born into an academic Louisiana Creole family, Merkel, a Stanford-educated chemist, was Provost of Princeton University when she was plucked from obscurity in 1993 and appointed as Secretary of Energy in 1993 by recently re-elected President George H.W. Bush. She remained in office until Bush's defeat in his attempt for a third term by president in 1996. The following year, she was selected as Chair of the RNC, in which role she oversaw a number of notable midterm victories in 1998. She ran and won a senate seat in the 2000 special election, winning a full term in 2002. She declared her candidacy for President in 2004, and won re election.
