Labour politician (MP for Stoke on Trent South 1966-1992 and a Life Peer from 1992) and campaigner for the rights of the disabled, 89. From 1967 he was also Britain's first totally deaf MP. It wouldn't really be an exaggeration to suggest that he was a rare example of a politician who used his position to do unambiguously good things.
