Barack Obama/Joe Biden: 2009-2017 Marco Rubio/Mitch Daniels: 2017-2021 John Hickenlooper/Kirsten Gillibrand: 2021-2029
In detail:
Obama/Biden squeak it out in 2012, helped by a protracted Gingrich/Romney fight that sends both of their negatives sky-high. Gary Johnson sets a high-water mark for the Libertarians with something like 5 percent of the vote, his campaign hits Republicans worse but he gets a sizable number of protest votes from the left as well.
In 2016, voter fatigue from 8 years of Obama, Rubio's inroads among Hispanics, and deep left-wing dislike of the horrible Andrew Cuomo lead to an absolute bloodbath in the Electoral College. Some Nader-like figure does even better than Gary Johnson, and even manages to win Vermont.
In 2020, people revolt against GOP overreach, climate change has finally gotten too bad to ignore, the Dems nominate better candidates, and take back the White House (the House and Senate both flip Dem in 2018 after a long period of mostly R control).
