Hmm, I wonder if it will be the same order. I guess I have a few weeks to work on a New Brunswick proposal. Or maybe I shouldn't bother...

I had a feeling this would come out today (looks like they're using the same time table as 10 years ago, minus a week)

Interesting map, I will of course have to do an analysis, probably tonight at some point. I have an issue with some of the riding names again, but more about that later.

Hmm, Beausejour is over populated, why not shift some of its territory to Miramichi?

They said than the coastal area was a community of interest and Miramichi was already too big.

Bah.

I agree with the comments so far. The Nfld commission was bold, and came up with some good ridings. Why can't they do the same in NB? I might have to make my own proposal.

The more I think about it, the more I like the idea of having just City of Moncton as one riding. It's fast growing, so who cares if it is 6,000 people less than the quotient. Only issue is Saint John is slightly larger, and would want to be its own riding too.

Southwestern NB is a bit too complex, but the rest of the province can be divided into neat, compact ridings that are very close to the quotient.

*Madawaska--Restigouche--Grand Falls (add the Francophone Grand Falls area)
*Acadie--Bathurst
*Miramichi--Kent (Northumberland and Kent counties together make 78,000 people)
*Beausejour--Westmorland (Westmorland County minus Moncton)
*Moncton (just Moncton)

Maybe that would make too much sense?

That was my thought too... I can't wait to read your analysis and your proposed boundaries Hatman.  Are you still working on the Nfld proposal as well?

I was too pleased with the Nfld boundaries to bother, but I will be doing one for NB.

Speaking of the '04 proposal, they also tried putting Grand Falls in with Madawaska-Restigouche, but residents were upset because while they would've been with a Francophone riding, they would have been separated from the potato farmers of Tobique-Mactaquac. Apparently Grand Falls has historically been with Madawaska-Restigouche. Anyways, due to population and linguistic reasons, I would put the area back.

Well, it's not hard to make the Tories win Beausejour with a few changes.

I heard a lot of rumours about Saanich-GI. Looks like Elizabeth May does lose some of her stronger areas as expected, but it might not be too bad for her.

Have fun with it Hatman - it looks like quite a dog's breakfast!

Heh. Im going to divide it into 3 parts. Guess I'll have to hold off on some other things I was going to post about (I had assumed NS was next, in a week from now)

Esquimalt-Colwood actually looks fairly NDP friendly.

Naniamo--Alberni looks like it's getting more NDP friendly. It loses some NDP areas, but gains some from Courtenay. Still probably a Tory hold.

Yikes. I think we would still win the new riding, but it will be a fight for sure.

Nanaimo-Alberni should also include Courtenay in the name. Howabout Parksville-Alberni-Courtenay?

BTW, I remember seeing that rabble thread. I am disappointed that Burnaby-Seymour riding could not be avoided.

Also, looks like Jean Crowder has been pushed out of her riding. Maybe she'll run in the new South Cowichan riding.

And Randall Garrison would run in Esquimalt-Colwood?

Yes. He lives in Esquimalt. Also, John Duncan may have been forced out of his district, as he lives in Courtenay. But, he has lived all over the riding (Vancouver Island North), so I don't think he will run any where else.

What bugs me about riding names in Canada is how long some of them can get, often naming three or four communities in the riding as its name. I mean, I get why, but if a riding takes over five seconds to actually just say...

Quebec is a pretty bad offender.

Three should be the maximum. It's necessary in some places, unfortunately.

Anyways, part one of analyzing BC (Vancouver Island): http://canadianelectionatlas.blogspot.ca/2012/06/bc-federal-riding-boundary-proposal.html

the best is "Mr. Brown, Barrie". I always sounds like a fruity name. I remember when Louise Thibeault was an MP, the clerk had a mouthful saying her riding name "Rimouski-Neigette—Témiscouata—Les Basques"

Here are the proposed Vancouver ridings superimposed on a map I created showing the left and right wing areas in the city (using results from the last 2 municipal elections, the last federal and the last provincial election):

Red = left
Blue = right
Purple = mix

Do you plan to review the rest of BC, Hatman?

Yes, I do. I've just been enjoying the long weekend and the weather. Cheesy But, I hope to do the next part this evening. That map I made on the last page is a sneak peak for my next update.

The new proposed Alberta map is out
http://www.redecoupage-federal-redistribution.ca/content.asp?section=ab&document=index&lang=e

Looks like the newly renamed Edmonton East may be more NDP winnable than it was before.

Oooh. Finally, I can compare a map I made. Calgary looks very different than my proposal. I like the new riding names though. I guess they felt with the new ridings, they had to go with names instead of directionals. Same goes for Edmonton really. Not much change in Edmonton-Stratchona which is good. I was working on an Edmonton proposal that would have altered it somewhat.

As for rural Alberta, I'm not a fan of their splitting up of Red Deer. It's not big enough for that.
