[Having resigned as Sectary of the Treasury during the Gustaf Administration Ben has become a visiting professor of History at Princeton University and having been invited to the annual Dinner of the AAPB, Atlantians Against Partisan Bickering, in Richmond VA the press corps has come out in force to hear what is expected to be an appeal to moderates to support the candidacy of Al for the Senate]

Ladies and Gentlemen.

I would like to thank you all very much for your kind invitation to come and speak at your annual dinner, it is a source of enormous pride for me that the cause of promoting a more moderate and gentle public dialog is alive and well and indeed enshrined in the aims of this very organisation, and its right that right thinking people should stop to ask themselves why the partisan rivalry and bitterness of the last few months is necessary and to say “can’t we do better?”, “don’t we deserve a higher standard from out politicians?”

You will all know that I for a time was the Chair of the AFDNC, and yet with much sadness I was forced to leave that post because I believed that extremists within he party had driven it to the left and left it removed from the aspirations and values of ordinary Atlantians, after that I served in the first UAC cabinet but have become inactive since them, concentrating instead on the rewarding task of teaching.

I trust that the many conservatives within the UAC will listen to what I say, I am a social conservative. I’m a traditionalist… I make no bones about it, I’m not a radical like some conservatives nor am I a fair-weather moderate who assumes a position to mask their true radicalism. In Al, my… our district has a great opportunity to elect a true radical, a bi-partisan at a time when they are in short supply, a defender of the hard working Atlantian at a time when such a figure was never more desperately needed and most importantly a man who as senator will be committed to upholding a traditional values, faith, family and country, values that have bound not simply his native mountain state but the entire of the upper south and Midwest, values which I believe his opponent the Senator for this district does not appreciate… in Al we have the chance for a fresh start and a refreshingly common sense approach to the problems which face our region, not party dogma, not Michael Moore extremism but simply down to earth common sense.

I hope you will forgive me for taking this time to give what some here may call a stump speech, but I really think friends we’re looking at a pretty stark choice between a candidate who shares our values and another who does not, a stark choice indeed my friends and it must be seen as essential for us to show our support for Al, he is the only moderate in this contest and so deserves our backing if we are to have the Senator we deserve.

And now, I’m starving so lets eat… thanks folks and see ya-all on the campaign trail.

[press announcement: Ben will going to the UAC Forum to discuss an endorsement for Al in this Senate Contest]

Statement:

Senator Texasgurl is once again resorting to the politics of partisanship and the black and white divide, I have never said that she has “no morals” merely that she does not share the values of her constituents on a number of issues varying widely, from abortion to welfare reform and employees rights. I have not once called into question the Senator’s moral rectitude and in my remarks at the AAPB Annual Dinner in Richmond I was in fact arguing that it is the politics of polarisation that is driving our nation apart and that and end is needed to this self-destructive cycle, the Senator’s remarks are a clear example of the kind of politics I was refering to and that the Al campaign is fighting against and only adds weight to my argument.
