looking at the 1998 almanac, it says he is 4th on Banking (ahead of Frank) and 3rd on Judiciary. He had been in the house since the age of 30 and would probably become the banking chairman in 06 and would probably be judiciary chairman by 2020.

But he gave it up to the senate seat and went from the near-top of the totem pole to the bottom. Even if Schumer hadn't run, D'Amato probably would still have lost to Ferraro.

Because he's, shall we say, slightly politically ambitious? Wink

Because he's an insufferable creep and also because it looked like the GOP would have a House majority for the foreseeable future.

actually in 98 they only had like a ten seat majority so it was thought that the democrats would win it back during the next gop midterm.

Schumer could be the Dem Whip when Harry Reid retires and Durbin would be the Dem Senate Leader. Or he could take on Durbin for the position of Dem Senate Leader! So whats so bad that he left the US House anyway?

Pat Moynihan's time was up in the Senate and he knew the next Democrat from New York the spotlight would be on. Eventhough, he didn't mind the spotlight to be shared with Hillary Clinton rising status from the Lewinsky scandle.
