I know I'm supposed to support absolute monarchies, but Cromwell is one of my personal heros, and King Charles was one of the biggest dimwits in history, and there is also the religion issue,  so I would have gone with Cromwell.

This was actually a difficult choice.  I remember in my English Civil War seminar back in college that we were asked who we support and I reluctantly have to support Parliament.  Many of the religious issues involved do not really concern me one way or the other though.

Back in the mid-1980s, when I claimed to be Marxist (looking back I never was), I declared in sociology class that this Marxist had he been around in the 1640s, he would have fought for his King

I saw Cromwell as the champion of the bourgoeois interest and not the common man, while Charles I (however inept he was) was the paternalist trying to rule in the interests of all - so I'd have to say Charles I

Angry Scots on one side, secret Catholic on the other....
I say Parliament, while Charles's family regained power soon after they dragged in more Catholics, Parliament needed to have the power it gained under Cromwell to dispose of them.

Not that it goes against being Welsh or a Tory......

Cromwell

I'm a fan of the "William and Mary" monarchy, not the absolutist divine-righters of the pre-war period.

Charles I, though I would have favored limiting royal power.

Haven't been there, but I've been close. That area is quite nice. My mum's family is from Caerphilly, I spent most of my early years there. I still go as often as I can. Have you ever been?
