Christie just appointed the 48 year old New Jersey Attorney General, a republican, to fill Lautenberg's seat. That's surprising, the guy's been AG for little over a year.

I really thought he was going with Kean, Sr. Not surprising that he went with a trusted insider though.

Does Chiesa have eyes on the governorship? Could be a move to boost his credibility as Christie's successor.

Doubt it, he's never held elected office before. He was appointed AG by Christie.

Again, Democrats have weird fantasies about the guy. He's competent, not batsh**t insane, doesn't want to intern liberals in camps and he's a real maverick type; but he's a conservative Republican who is still loyal, more or less, to his party. People who thought he was going to appoint a Democrat were delusional.

Did you really expect him to appoint a Democrat? If it was a Democratic Governor, would you expect him to appoint a Republican in a similar situation?

No, I didn't.  But I think the right thing for him to do would have been to appoint a Democrat.

Well, he sure fooled us into thinking he wouldn't appoint an insider. But Christie really isn't any different from the rest of them. This reminds me of Abercrombie last December.

I'm surprised it wasn't Gaugdano.

Guagdano is on the ballot in November.  It would be a little tough for her to campaign from Washington, D.C.

So Christie appointed a not-so-well-known lawyer caretaker to the temporary seat, like Manchin did with Carte Goodwin.

I was hoping for Kean Sr. Anyway, Chiesa already said he's just serving as a placeholder.

Interestingly, he's the first Republican since 1982 to serve as Senator. Nicholas F. Brady was a placeholder in between Williams' resignation and Lautenberg's first election. The last time NJ elected a Republican Senator was... wow, 1972.

Does Chiesa have eyes on the governorship? Could be a move to boost his credibility as Christie's successor.

Governor appoints every statewide officers in NJ.
