Certainly one of the most unusual towns I've come across in doing research on New England towns: a textile mill town that was heavily Republican during the New Deal era!

I'm not sure what the story here is, but I would imagine a lack of a Catholic population made the difference. If that's the case, then I guess even blue-collar/working-class Yankees in New England remained faithfully Republican in spite of the New Deal's labor appeals.

Is Hopedale near VT? If not, was it geographically similar? Has it had a leftward swing in recent years like VT? If so, then maybe it's a lot like VT, just like Monroe Co, MI votes a lot like Ohio.

was the textile mill non-union? Maybe that's part of the reason also.
