Both Cuomo and O’Malley are near the top of the list in terms of likelihood of running (based on public hints, like O’Malley making repeated visits to Iowa and Cuomo hiring a bunch of Obama and Clinton aides).  However, the consensus seems to be that both would struggle to gain enough traction in the primaries to actually win the nomination.  If both of them run, which of the two would actually have a better chance of winning the nomination?  And how would they do it?  The other ~8 or 9 candidates are all taken down by heart attacks and sex scandals?

Bonus question: Are there any other potential candidates with a reasonable chance of running who would be less likely to win than either of them?

Of winning? Cuomo. Though if it comes down to those two I'd personally support MOM.

O'Malley is only out of office due to term limits.

Since Cuomo is leading in this poll at the moment, I’ll make the case for O’Malley (or against Cuomo):

I think O’Malley’s instincts at the moment are basically right, that the Democratic primary electorate wants its leaders to be maximalist anti-Trump and want to push the party to the left.  Hence, his using hyperbolic language to attack Trump, and his support for $15 minimum wage and the like.  I don’t think he actually comes across as authentic when he does these things, and he looks too desperate, which is why he’s very unlikely to win the nomination.  But he’s at least trying.

Cuomo, on the other hand, seems to favor an “above the fray” positioning, in which he tries to triangulate his way forward.  Based on Politico’s outline of Cuomo’s approach to 2020, I just don’t think he gets it.  I don’t see that working on the Democratic primary electorate this time around.

Thoughts?

O'Malley should just run for Senate in 2018.

No need to. We already control both of Maryland's seats. I say he should make a re-bid for the governorship.

Cuomo would obviously have the establishment support and be favored, but I'd certainly be rooting for O'Malley.

I'm not so sure that Cuomo is favored. He's not that great or well-known of a politician. He's not even that well-liked in New York. And there's gonna be a big movement to push for the most progressive candidate. I doubt that person will be O'Malley, but if it is, then he'd have a really good shot.

Cuomo realistically, but I'd vote for MOM.

Cuomo would crush O'Malley.

I'm not saying Cuomo's better.  I'm just saying he'd win.
