Perhaps people like this. They say they don't, but most "strong leaders" make it about "them", do they not?
People disrespect people all day long. I think that most Americans secretly like Trump telling folks off; they wish they could do it themselves in more situations than they do. Trump doesn't meekly take people crapping on him. He takes no excrement. Folks like that more than they let on, and respect that quality more than they do graciousness.
FDR and Churchill never commanded troops in the field in World War II. Both knew enough to spread the credit around. It was about having troops in the field, troops being moved around successfully, getting supplies (including food, fuel, and munitions) to troops in the field, and getting people to make great sacrifices in living standards.
...and consider this summation of wartime sacrifice:
YOU KNOW WHO.
Not one first-person singular pronoun or even a reference to himself appears in this speech of modest scale and great profundity. Lincoln wasn't the one to put his life on the line in battle, and he made sure that everyone knew that. And even "we" is an admission of the insignificance of the presence of people there after the battle cannot adequately honor those who died. No -- there's something far bigger for which people died: liberty.
Government of the people, by the people, and for the people would include slaves not yet liberated from bondage.
