The amount of Mondale counties that swung against clinton is pretty astonishing, and considering that some gave mondale a healthy support while he was getting trounced in every other part of the country, while clinton was demolished by record margins (especially in the appalachia region)

All 3 Mondale-Trump counties in MI are in the UP (which has 3-4% of MI's population).

I'm not surprised to see so many IA and PA counties on this list. IA and PA virtually tied for Mondale's 5th and 6th best states in 1984-- barely edging out NY (!).  IA's swing against Clinton in '92 and again in 2016 was quite remarkable. PA's trend away from the Dems has been more gradual and less dramatic.
