I keep reading about the so-called “Illinois exodus” over taxes and a NYT article says 77% of California Republicans want to move over the state's progressive politics. I’ve also read about a couple who chose Virginia as their retirement transplant destination over North Carolina because of NC’s right-wing extremist GOP state legislature.

I personally would like to move to California one day because it’s the most LGBT-friendly place in the nation both in terms of attitudes and public policy. But I can’t help but wonder how many partisans in ideologically opposite states, say Democrats in Mississippi or Republicans in California, pack up and move somewhere else solely because of politics.

Few to none, and the example of LGBTQ+ communities attracting transplants doesn't really count in my view.

Not many at all. At least not directly; plenty of people move due to economic pressures that are caused or exacerbated by public policy.

It's hard for people who post on a forum like this to comprehend just how little most people think about politics outside of a few weeks leading up to a presidential election day.

I don't know that many do it for overtly political reason but many make their choices based on cultural reasons (assuming they have the luxury of doing so).  i doubt you'll find many California Republicans clamoring to move to Mississippi or West Virginia.

I'm not planning on returning to Oklahoma after I graduate anytime soon, mostly for political reasons. So, me, I guess?

People definitely move for taxes, which are political, imo. NY->FL is perhaps the archetypal example of this. And in multi-state urban areas, people could move for other political reasons other than taxes, such as business regulations, dissatisfaction with government services, corruption, professional licensing, frustration with lack of like-minded people, or views on immigration, all of which are politics-related.

And then you have transplants who move somewhere, get fed up with the politics, and move back home or to a state with politics similar to their own. This is probably the most common case.

Back before Obergefell, and especially pre-2012 ish, some (not many) same-sex couples moved to states where SSM was legal.

But no, people do not move to Iowa to vote in the #FITN caucus, or things like that, if that's what you mean. That is only something an Atlas poster would do.

Two friends of mine (both male) moved from Mississippi to Massachusetts in order to marry (this was pre-Obergefell), and stayed there to start a family and escape the daily harassment.

My spouse and I are reluctant to return to Wisconsin, even under Tony Evers, due to the contentious and toxic political environment there. They possibly want to teach, and after Walker decimated they entire educational system and threw teachers under the bus, the prospect of returning is unattractive at best.

Ironic that we live in Indiana, which is way to the right of Wisconsin. But there are good things about one-party rule: Republicans are responsible for governing the state, and have no one to blame when policy hurts people.

Taxes, sure. If you earn a high income and are not into conspicuous consumption and can tolerate poor public services, then Tennessee is great (no state income tax, but a brutal sales tax. You might want to grow your own food in the Volunteer State, though. If you are poor and live hand-to-mouth, then the absence of a state income tax will not offset a 9% sales tax. On the other hand, Oregon has no sales tax, but brutal property and income taxes.

Because one would be paying high taxes to support public services stretched to the breaking point in Illinois or California, I would be leery of moving to the sticks in such places in which one gets to pay Swedish taxes on Mississippi income.

A big problem with some states is housing costs. It's going to take a 1929-1932 meltdown to solve that, which is about as attractive as dialysis or some chemotherapy drugs for cancer.

Sure, I know people like that too. And even though that could be considered a political reason, Wolverine seemed to suggest that they were more curious about people who move for reasons of their vote having more of an impact.

I chose to go to college in a swing state (NC), in part, for political reasons, but it wasn't the deciding or even a significant factor.  My mom and I had to move out of our home state for financial reasons and the South had what we thought was a more favorable climate to us and a lower cost of living, but my mom refused to live below the VA/NC border.

Five years later we both hate it here.  Now I'm looking towards moving to a state where pot is legal so I can be a degenerate without worrying about cops (or high street prices).
