Germany (+18%) and Poland (+17%) have seen the biggest increases of gay marriage support since the same question was last asked in 2015.

On the other hand, support dropped in 7 EU countries - with the worst declines in the Czech Republic (-9%) and Hungary (-6%).

Interesting numbers. Obviously there is a strong connection to religion. The more religious society is, the bigger opposition to same-sex marriage is.

I'm always surprised at how thoroughly the Iberian countries have embraced SSM and other relatively recent social progresses, given their backgrounds. Compare to Italy, where standard Catholic social conservatism is alive and well.

Not necessarily. Estonia, CZ, Bulgaria are far more secular than Spain. Seems to be more of a East-West Split to me.

Don’t conflate regional divide with religious divide - it’s fairly clearly a divide between former Communist, Eastern European states, and Western European.

Seems to be the case.  I’d think Estonia and Czech Republic would be fine with gay marriage, but apparently not.

The big difference between support in Estonia compared to Latvia and in Czechia compared to Slovenia  surprises me.

Also, Bulgaria is the European Union's Mississippi...

Some really interesting numbers in the full report - Apparently the Maltese are more accepting of the trans community than the gay community.

Estonia is way more advanced than Latvia.

I would have expected Estonia to be higher, because it’s almost Nordic, kind of like Finland.

It’s not that surprising - in many places throughout Europe, homosexual rights and transgender rights are much more distinct than they are in America.
