When most of counties in Michigan swang hard towards Trump, this county in the upper part of the glove was an oddity as it swang towards Hillary. How come?

It's a resort/vacation area, one of the few kinds of rural communities that's moving leftward. 51% of residents are college-educated, and entertainment makes up a disproportionate amount of employment.

Yes. At the precinct level, one can see this phenomenon of resort areas staying or trending Democratic in some Upper Peninsula counties too, like Keweenaw.

The resort influence may explain why lily-white counties in northeastern Minnesota and northwestern Wisconsin (St. Louis, Lake, Douglas, Ashland) that were national banner McGovern counties in 1972 stayed with Hilary even if not by large margins. Comparing them with somewhat analogous (unionised mining or forestry) counties in Appalachia that voted for George McGovern but in 2016 75 or 80 percent for Trump suggests other influences at work.

Leelanau County's swing towards Clinton, in hindsight, was a precursor of its flip to Biden this year. Biden won it over Trump by 5%.

Resort areas are "connected."

"Connected" = Democrat in this alignment.

R-state Democrats should run on "connection" as a #populist Purple heart platform. Rural public transport or something.

It's interesting IMO that Leelanau flipped when Grand Traverse stayed R--one usually thinks of Traverse City as the iconic NW Michigan tourist community. Does Grand Traverse have more retirees or something?
