http://politicalwire.com/archives/2006/10/25/republicans_mount_fight_in_new_jersey.html

Two independent sources tell The Hotline that the National Republican Senatorial Committee "has decided to spend as much as $5 million between Friday and November 7 in a last ditch effort to dislodge Democratic incumbent Bob Menendez from office."

According to the sources, "both of whom have detailed and first-hand knowledge of the buy, the NRSC has reserved about $3.2 million worth of time in the ultra-expensive New York City market and possibly as much as $1.5 million in Philadelphia."

"The NRSC believes that Menendez's negative ratings are higher than the mean for safe incumbents, and strategists note how the media’s focus on a federal investigation touching Menendez helped push Tom Kean Jr. into a narrow lead in September."

Somehow I doubt this is true. They probably decided to do it only if equal gay rights was ruled on.

I think it makes total sense, frankly.  You can't buy more time in MO, TN, VA or RI.  Burns in MT is going to float or sink his own ship and more money probably wouldn't help there either.  OH and PA are pretty much gone in my mind.

So, as the article says, you decide between MD, MI and NJ.  I think MI is too farfetched, so it's between MD and NJ.  I think NJ is the more competitive race, the less Democrat of the two states and you take into account that Steele has nearly twice as much cash-on-hand as Cardin.

Some may disagree and say you should put some into MD.  Perhaps, I don't know.

Ha. It's not going to do them any good. Menendez still has 2 million more plus the DSCC.

I actually think this is dumb move on the part of the NRSC under the ever-magnificent leadership of Liddy Dole.

It seems Dole's main strategy is to gain at least one Democratic seat regardless of whether she ends up losing all seven or eight competitive GOP seats. I would have put this money into Maryland. At least there generic pro-GOP ads would have a positive effect on Allen in NoVa, too. Plus, getting Steele into the Senate as a black Republican would be a HUGE coup for the nationwide party. Getting Kean into the Senate is good, I guess, but he'll just be another Northeastern RINO in the Specter/Snowe/Collins mold. Even if Kean gets elected the RINOs aren't going to start drowning out the Religious Right and ultra-conservatives. On the other hand Steele getting elected could potentially finally break the Dems hold on black voters nationwide.

The Maryland race is the best possible opportunity for the Republican Party this year, and I'm afraid they're going to let it slip away. But hey at least they finally gave up on Santorum!

Well considering the momentum now seems to be back to Kean, going by previous patterns we should look for tossup to slight momentum either way and the race will be one of, if not the last to be called.

Would you say spending $5m on a toss-up race is "wasting' money?
Bob Menendez is still the slight favorite because of the Democratic lean of the state. Still, the NRSC has to try to take away a Democratic seat --- otherwise, the DSCC will spend all its cash in MO, TN and VA.

That might be the number reason, makes the Dems send money here too

The momentum hasnt gone to anyone, Menendez still leads as polls have been consistently showing all month.

Consistently showing?

Mason-Dixon +3 (within MOE)
Rasmussen TIE
NY Times +1 (within MOE)

All I'm seeing is dead heat from Lean Menendez a few weeks before, Kean is gaining steam from his father and other things at the right time
