Really? That's what the whole Lebanese Civil War was about. The Maronites (and other Christians) had seized complete power with Syrian and Israeli support, and the Druze, Shi'ites and Sunnis together with the PLO tried to drive them from power (and succeeded, resulting a massive Christian exodus but also a more democratic society). The Civil War was where Hezbollah was born, too, unfortunately.

I'm not very well-read on Lebanon, so I had thought more Maronites left, and I was unaware of the large presence there still is. Interestingly enough, theres a disproportionate amount of Lebanese Catholics in my neighborhood, a few of which I'm good friends with, and their families had left because of the war, and they've told me a fair bit about the country.

Well no. What was the result was a Syrian puppet state masquerading as a democracy in which ethnic sectarian tensions were again ensconced by the constitution, stating that a Maronite had to be President, a Shi'ite Prime Minister, etc. So no the society was not more democratic as a whole, it was probably about the same as before.
